  • School security measures pass Senate panel

    RICHMOND – A Virginia legislative committee has advanced three bills intended to improve school safety.
    The bills were recommended by a task force appointed by Gov. Bob McDonnell in response to the December mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

  • Bomb threat determined to be hoax

    INDEPENDENCE ― A bomb threat at Grayson County High School on Feb. 12 turned out to be a hoax.

    Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan said he received a call around noon that day from Grayson school administrator Steve Cornett in reference to a bomb threat found written on a bathroom wall at GCHS.

  • Officer Bobbitt watching over GES

    As Galax Elementary students flooded the hallways of the school on the way to their respective classrooms, a protective figure stood amongst them, keeping a safe watch.
    The school’s new student resource officer Fred Bobbitt offered friendly greetings to the students as they walked by, receiving toothy smiles and emphatic waves in return.
    “I’m willing to bet that you’ve gotten more hugs this week than you’ve ever had,” laughed Principal Brian Stuart.

  • Carroll schools want to step up security measures

    HILLSVILLE — County officials have mentioned concerns about safety in Carroll Public Schools in the wake of the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., so what new measures are under consideration?
    School leaders have requested $4.45 million under the capital improvement project line item from the Carroll County supervisors for fiscal year 2013-2014.
    Most of that, if budgeted, would get earmarked for the replacing the aging heating and air conditioning system at Carroll County High School.

  • Buses can travel south on U.S. 52

    RICHMOND — State transportation officials have worked out a plan to allow Carroll County school buses to use southbound U.S. 52, without having to pass legislation to do it, according to Del. Anne B. Crockett-Stark.

  • Art school lands $500,000 for woodworking shop

    Chestnut Creek School of the Arts made a giant leap forward with their Woodworking Studio project on Monday, when it was announced that they  received a $500,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.
    The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development announced the grant on Monday, along with awards for 10 other projects in the ARC region that together total $2.2 million.

  • Teacher raise would cost Carroll $320,000

    HILLSVILLE — Gov. Bob McDonnell’s proposed 2 percent raises for teachers would cost Carroll County Public Schools more than $320,000 to give all employees a pay increase.
    The governor’s proposal for fiscal year 2013-14 involves giving a “compensation supplement for Standards of Quality funded instructional positions,” as Carroll School Board officials discussed at their Jan. 12 meeting.
    Typically, school officials want to give across-the-board raises, not just to the teachers.

    Committee tables school officers bill
    A bill to change school procedures on building security was effectively sent to detention by the Senate Finance Committee this week.
    Legislation calling for local school boards to work with local law enforcement agencies so school resource officers are assigned in public schools across Virginia was sent to a state school safety task force for evaluation.

  • GES class is finalist for $10,000 prize

    Nearing the end of the UCT Gives Back contest, Galax Elementary School’s Cooperative Care Center for Exceptional Children (CCEC) has received an outpouring of support and votes, bringing the program closer each day to a $10,000 prize.
    The contest first came to the school’s attention when GES Assistant Principal Sonia Truitt heard about it from her parents. Her father, Bob Taylor, is an active member of the local United Commercial Travelers (UCT) council.

  • Natural gas, biomass could cut heating costs

    HILLSVILLE — An engineering study shows that St. Paul School in Carroll County might be able to save thousands of dollars a year by heating with “biomass” instead of oil.
    The biomass in this case would be sawdust pressed into pellets.
    A report by Langseth Engineering on both St. Paul and Hillsville Elementary schools was presented to the Carroll County School Board at its Jan. 7 meeting.
