  • Board hears support for special ed

    HILLSVILLE — Protect funding for special education programs in Carroll, two supporters asked at the school division's first public hearing for the 2011-2012 budget process.
    Angela Dixon of Galax, the parent of a special needs child, appeared before the Carroll School Board at its Feb. 8 meeting and said the schools have an excellent program with a wonderful staff.
    Her son has done well and developed thanks to the efforts of the special education program in the schools, and she asked the school board to keep the program at its current funding level.

  • Making up is hard to do

    HILLSVILLE — The discussion of making up each missed snow day got heated at the Carroll County School Board.
    At issue was whether educators should add all the missed days back into the calendar, plus extend the length of the school day for a month, so instructional time for the students would not take a bigger hit.
    A calendar committee looked into it and Assistant Superintendent Strader Blankenship presented the board with ideas to get those 18 school days back.
    • Option 1 involved using all make-up days and ending the school year on May 31.

  • Grayson School Board appoints new chairman

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County School Board has a new chairman following a meeting Jan. 20.
    The board elected Hobert Bailey chairman and Shannon Holdaway vice chairman. Bailey was nominated by former chairwoman Misty Cassell.
    “Thank you,” said Bailey. “I appreciate your confidence, and I’ll do my best.”
    Member Gary Burris nominated Holdaway for vice chairman. Holdaway also served as vice chairman in 2010.

  • School system to sell three tracts

    HILLSVILLE — Educators have the go-ahead from the Carroll supervisors to sell surplus land and put the proceeds toward school construction.
    The Carroll School Board last September voted to accept sealed bids on property amounting to a little less than four acres behind the former Hillsville Elementary School on Oak Street.

  • Carroll schools save big on energy

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Schools have saved an estimated $1 million in energy costs since 2003 as the result of initiating an energy savings plan.
    The school system was spending more than $550,000 a year on energy expenses in 2003-04.
    With a goal to reduce the budget cost for energy consumption and save resources, the Carroll School Board hired Energy Education, Inc., to set guidelines and install the “cost avoidance” software to track what was being spent.

  • Schools earn state awards

    Seven elementary schools in the Twin Counties received recognition from Gov. Bob McDonnell and the state Board of Education on Jan. 20.
    Three Grayson County schools — Baywood, Fairview and Providence Elementary — earned the 2011 Board of Education Competence to Excellence Award for continued progress, including meeting all state and federal educational benchmarks for at least two consecutive years.
