  • Chairman says school funds mismanaged

    INDEPENDENCE – Larry Bartlett, newly appointed chairman of the Grayson County School Board, delivered some disturbing news during a called meeting Tuesday night.

    Bartlett said that, after working with auditors and Norma Quesinberry, the school system’s director of finance, it was determined that the county’s 2014-2015 education budget would have a shortfall of approximately $593,000.

    INDEPENDENCE – Larry Bartlett moved up the ranks quickly on the Grayson County School Board.

    He was appointed May 22, sworn in Memorial Day and on Tuesday night, he was elected chairman.

    Gary Burris made the motion to elect Bartlett as chairman and Fred Weatherman seconded the motion and asked that Bartlett be elected by acclamation.

    There were no other nominations and the vote was unanimous, with Bartlett abstaining.

    Shannon Holdaway is vice chairman of the five-member board.

  • Grayson School Board calls emergency meeting

    INDEPENDENCE – The Grayson County School Board held an emergency called meeting May 30 at the central office in Independence.

    The meeting was called for the board to discuss accounting information with Norma Quesinberry, the school system’s director of finance. No action was taken after the meeting.

    A school auditor was scheduled to be at the central office on Monday to meet with Quesinberry.

  • Grayson School Board to choose chairman

    INDEPENDENCE — A special called meeting of the Grayson County School Board will be held Tuesday in the Independence Middle School library at 6 p.m.

    The meeting was rescheduled from June 1 due to conflicts with concurrent school sports events.

    One of the purposes is to elect a board chairman. The post has been vacant since former chairman Hobert Bailey resigned in April.

    The board will choose a chairman from among its members: Vice Chairman Shannon Holdaway, Fred Weatherman, Wynn Combs, Gary Burriss and Larry Bartlett.

  • Student initiative targets bullying

    HILLSVILLE — The world is already a difficult place without the added pressure and stress that come with school bullying, and that is what a group of students intend to combat and prevent through a new initiative.

    The Carroll County Special Projects Organization, formed in January 2013, was organized to provide a resource to students who had suffered from bullying, or who wished to become an advocate against bullying.

  • School board accepts Chalfant's resignation

    This week's special called meeting of the school board has changed from Monday to Tuesday at 6 p.m., due to conflicts with school sporting events.

    INDEPENDENCE – It took the Grayson County School Board less than five minutes to accept the resignation of Schools Superintendent Kevin Chalfant during a special called meeting on Monday.

  • County: school offer is all-or-nothing

    That’s what the Grayson County Board of Supervisors wants the school board to know about its offer to give $1.1 million above the required minimum funding for the school system in the coming fiscal year.

  • Galax sets June 13 as graduation date

    Galax City Public Schools has set June 13 as the Galax High School graduation date.

    GHS 1997 graduate Sarah B. Hiza, Ph.D., has been selected as the graduation speaker this year. Hiza went on to obtain degrees from both Virginia Tech and the University of Akron and works in propulsion systems.

  • Chalfant resigns as Grayson school chief

    UPDATE:

    The Grayson County School Board held a special called meeting on May 25, where members voted unanimously 5-0 to accept the superintendent’s resignation. The meeting was the first for Larry Bartlett, sworn in earlier that day after he was appointed by a circuit court judge to fill the vacant Oldtown District seat on the school board.
