  • School board dismisses teacher

    INDEPENDENCE — Among the personnel items approved at the Grayson County School Board’s June meeting was the dismissal of a teacher.
    Mark Allen Osborne was dismissed effective June 12.
    Osborne, a former agriculture teacher, had been on paid leave since he was indicted April 27 by a Grayson County grand jury.

  • Virginia schools exempt from strict AYP standards

    Five more states – including Virginia – have been granted flexibility from key provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind education law, the Obama administration announced Friday.
    That brings the total number of states receiving waivers to 24. Thirteen other applications are still being reviewed.

    The Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education recently awarded the following scholarships to Galax High School graduates for the 2011-2012 school year:

  • Grayson to name new school chief

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County School Board will hold a special called meeting Monday to appoint a new superintendent for the school system.
    The meeting in the Grayson County Courthouse Boardroom will begin with a closed session at 5:30 p.m., followed by an open session beginning at 6 p.m.
    At that time, the new school chief will be introduced. Light refreshments will be served after the meeting.
    Division Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Thomas is leaving June 30 after serving in the position for the last six years.

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Public Schools has received a total of 22 applications in its superintendent search, including 15 from Virginia, according to a news release.
    The school board recently began a superintendent search after Greg Smith decided to resign his position to take over the leadership of Richmond County schools. He will depart at the end of June.
