  • Indictments charge theft from elderly patients

    ABINDGON — A senior social worker for Grayson County and the companion provider she hired have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges they committed fraud to steal money from a pair of elderly patients.
    The grand jury on Thursday charged Jennifer Edward Hall, 36, and Bernard Dale Satterfield, 46, both of Galax, with crimes related to the defendants’ scheme to steal money from elderly patients under their care as employees of the Grayson County Department of Social Services.

  • Hancock pleads guilty to drug charges

    ROANOKE — A Hillsville man pleaded guilty in federal court June 30 to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.
    Benjamin Lee Hancock, one of six Twin County residents charged in an 11-count indictment, appeared with his attorney to answer charges of conspiracy and distribution of meth in U.S. District Court in Roanoke, where he agreed to plead guilty to the one count.
    "Count 1 charges me with conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine," the plea agreement, signed by Hancock, says.

  • Bank robber convicted

    HILLSVILLE — A Clemmons, N.C., man charged with robbing the First Citizens Bank in Galax last January entered a guilty plea on Thursday in Carroll County Circuit Court for one count of robbery.
    William Smitherman, 20, was sentenced to 40 years, with all but seven years and six months suspended. He was given credit for time served while awaiting the trial and placed on active supervision for the time suspended.

  • Sweet convicted of sexual battery

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man was convicted last week in Grayson County Circuit Court of two counts of aggravated sexual battery.
    A jury of eight women and four men deliberated about three hours last Thursday before finding Fred Sweet Jr., 67, guilty of both charges.
    The jury recommended a sentence of five years in prison and a $20,000 fine on one charge and seven years in prison and a $30,000 fine on the second charge.
    The alleged offenses occurred April 21, 2007, and involved a girl who was age 5 at the time. A grand jury indicted Sweet in April 2008.

  • Police: Suspects took over Social Services clients' finances

    INDEPENDENCE — A former Grayson County Department of Social Services caseworker and a DSS caregiver took control of two elderly clients' finances and stole thousands of dollars, according to a criminal complaint filed June 16.
    The charges came after a joint investigation by the U.S. Secret Service and the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Carroll grand jury issues 104 indictments

    HILLSVILLE — A search of a vehicle stuck in the snow on Dec. 23, 2009, led to three indictments that the Carroll grand jury certified against a 33-year-old Dobson, N.C., man on Monday.
