  • Jones will return to Virginia for murder trial

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County authorities received word late last Friday that murder suspect Matthew Jones will be extradited to Virginia to stand trial for charges related to his girlfriend’s death last year.

  • Murder charges placed in 11-year-old crime

    INDEPENDENCE — Charges have been placed in the 11-year-old unsolved murder case of Brandon Billings, a Galax High School student and football player found shot to death in his truck in 2002.
    According to Grayson Commonwealth’s Attorney Doug Vaught, a special grand jury convened by the Grayson County Circuit Court returned indictments charging that Chad Allen Reeves, 33, and George Albert Harper III, 40, did “with malice aforethought, kill and murder” Kyle Brandon Billings at some time between Oct. 5 and 6, 2002.

  • TWO CHARGED FOR MURDER IN BILLINGS CASE

    INDEPENDENCE — Charges have been placed in the 11-year-old unsolved murder case of Brandon Billings, a Galax High School student found shot to death in his truck in 2002.

    According to Grayson Commonwealth's Attorney Doug Vaught, a Special Investigative Grand Jury convened by the Grayson County Circuit Court returned separate indictments charging that Chad Allen Reeves, 33, and George Albert Harper III, 40, did “with malice aforethought, kill and murder” Kyle Brandon Billings at some time between Oct. 5 and 6, 2002.

  • Jones could be tried for murder before robbery

    The boyfriend of a 33-year old Fries woman who was found dead after she was reported missing a month earlier is being extradited to Grayson County to face murder charges, but there’s still a question of exactly when the accused will return to Virginia.
    Matthew Steven Jones, 35, who was the boyfriend of Desia Rae George and the father of her youngest child, has been held in North Carolina on bank robbery charges since May of last year.

  • Hillsville mayor found guilty of impersonating officer

    BRISTOL — Hillsville Mayor Greg Crowder was convicted last Thursday on a misdemeanor charge of impersonating a law enforcement officer and was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail and pay a $500 fine.
    Crowder is appealing the conviction.
    Bristol General District Court Judge Blake McKinney found enough evidence to convict the Hillsville businessman and mayor, but not his wife, LouAnne Crowder, who faced the same charge stemming from a March 14 incident.

    District Court

    Ethan Douglas Funk of Galax, guilty of public swearing/intoxication; pay $25 fine and $91 costs.

  • Murder suspect free on $100,000 bond

    HILLSVILLE — A 28-year-old Pipers Gap woman accused of second-degree murder from an October 2013 incident received a bond from the Carroll County Circuit Court last Thursday.
    Before a crowd in the courtroom, Whitney Lee Isom was granted a $100,000 secured bond, according to court officials.
    Isom had been charged by direct indictment with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in December 2013 after the shooting death of Kevin Heath Frazier at 70 Rippey Hollow Road in Pipers Gap.
