  • Lewis murder trial delayed until November

    Staff Report

    MARION — A man charged in the hit-and-run death of a Fries woman and the vehicular injury of an Ivanhoe man has a new trial date in Smyth County, as of last week.

    John Randolph Lewis, charged in the first-degree murder of Heather Copeland Clontz; and the malicious assault of Samuel D. Lawson, was scheduled to appear in Smyth County Circuit Court on April 26, but the trial was continued after the judge granted a motion from the defense, according to the courts database.

  • New trial date set for chase, crash suspect

    INDEPENDENCE — A jury trial for Travis Dale Coulson, indicted on multiple charges in a Galax chase that allegedly caused another driver to crash through a house, has been rescheduled.

    Coulson, 38, of Galax, was scheduled to appear in Grayson County Circuit Court on April 21; but the case was continued and a new trial date is set for June 8, beginning at 9 a.m. The trial is scheduled to last one day.

  • Witnesses differ on release options

    HILLSVILLE – A Michigan man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity on felony charges in Carroll County will remain in the care of a state hospital. This decision was made at a commitment hearing held on April 12 in Carroll Circuit Court.

    MARION — During its March 28 quarterly session, a Smyth County grand jury handed down four indictments for a Wythe County man accused in the August 2016 hit-and-run killing of his ex-girlfriend and the attempted malicious wounding of her companion.

    The incident left 35-year-old Heather Michelle Clontz of Fries dead and 28-year-old Samuel David Lawson injured.

  • Jury won't hear some of Keepers' statements

    Staff Report

    CHRISTIANSBURG – Judge Robert Turk ruled on Monday that only parts of Natalie Keepers’ testimony will be admissible due to improper interrogation techniques by police.

    Only information gathered during the first three hours of day one, and all of the second day of the two-day interrogation, will be allowed in her two-week jury trial, currently scheduled to start Feb. 5, 2018.
