  • Man shot by deputies faces felony charges

    INDEPENDENCE — Randy Lee Anders, 33, of Mouth of Wilson, who was shot during an altercation with Grayson County deputies on April 29, 2013, is scheduled to appear in court on April 4.

  • Murder suspect transferred back to Va.

    DUBLIN — Chad Allen Reeves, 31, one of two suspects charged in connection with the killing of Brandon Billings 11 years ago, has been transported from a federal prison in Lexington, Ky., to the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin.

  • Man pleads guilty to assault

     

  • Former Rooftop director convicted of embezzling

    Christina Leigh Bedsaul, Rooftop of Virginia CAP’s former executive director, entered a no contest plea to three counts of embezzlement and one count of forgery in Grayson County Circuit Court on March 5.
    These pleas were made in connection with a case of unauthorized transfers of Rooftop funds, in three separate incidents that date back to 2007, according to court records.

  • Federal prosecutors collect $500M in penalties

    ROANOKE – The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia; which includes Galax, Carroll and Grayson; collected $501.5 million in criminal and civil penalties in fiscal year 2013.
    “This money helps provide restitution and other victim services, and supports law enforcement activities around the district,” U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy said when announcing the total in a report last month.

    These sentences were recorded in December in the Carroll County General District Court Office, Hillsville. Sentences may be appealed:

  • Former police dispatcher pleads guilty

    Burgandy Bobbitt, a former dispatcher for the Galax Police Department, has entered a “no contest” plea to 15 charges of making “annoyance calls” to Fries resident Heather Shaffner last year.
    The calls are classified as a Class 3 misdemeanor, for which the state of Virginia limits fines to $500 or less per charge.
    In court in Floyd County on Feb. 3, Bobbitt was found guilty on the 15 counts and fined a total of $2,054, including court costs.

  • Felony case involves deputy's shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County woman pleaded guilty Feb. 7 in Grayson County Circuit Court to a charge that resulted from the shooting of a Grayson County deputy sheriff in June 2012.
    Crystal Sue Gooslin-Wheatley, 48, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of ammunition after having been convicted of a felony.
