  • Berrier files for recount

    HILLSVILLE – Carroll County’s School Board election results for the Fancy Gap District are being challenged by candidate Phillip W. Berrier.

    Berrier has filed for a recount after incumbent Joey D. Haynes won the Nov. 7 election by a three-vote margin, with Berrier placing second in the four-way race.

    Gina Hall and Patricia Sebens also ran in the district race, but each garnered less than half of Berrier’s 498 votes. Haynes received 501.

  • Judge sets new date for Eisenhauer murder trial

    Staff Report

    CHRISTIANSBURG —David Eisenhauer’s trial for the first-degree murder of a Blacksburg teen will begin Feb. 5, after a judge set the new date on Monday.

    That’s the day already set aside for the beginning of co-defendant Natalie Keepers’ trial, but a new date for her has not been set.

  • Privett sentenced for sexual battery

    INDEPENDENCE — Dylan Michael Privett, charged with making inappropriate contact with a tenant at Grayson Manor Apartments earlier this year, was found guilty of a misdemeanor charge of sexual battery in Grayson County General District Court.

    According to the courts database, Privett was sentenced to 12 months in jail, with 11 months suspended on good behavior.

  • Car chase cases seen in Carroll Court

    HILLSVILLE — Two cases involving car chases, one from late last year and one from early this year, were seen in the Carroll County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
    The case of Kevin Nelson Beasley, 27, of Austinville, the subject of a three-day manhunt, was continued until February 21 in the Carroll County Circuit Court on Tuesday, according to the Carroll County Circuit Court Clerk’s office. He was initially set to enter a guilty plea on Tuesday.

  • Burglary suspect among those indicted

    Staff Report

    INDEPENDENCE – Twenty-five suspects accused of 39 drug violations and other charges were indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that convened last Friday.

    Among those charged was Scott Eugene Hampton of Galax, who was indicted for statutory burglary, felonious damage to property, possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a violent felony, grand larceny of a firearm and larceny with the intent to sell stolen property.

  • Nofsinger pleads guilty to murders

    HILLSVILLE — Richard Denny Nofsinger Jr. will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing an infant and her mother, after pleading guilty to charges of capital murder and first-degree murder.

    A plea agreement, accepted by prosecutors at the request of the victims’ family, removed the possibility of Nofsinger being sentenced to death.
