  • Former rescue captain gets second chance

    WYTHEVILLE — Instead of getting a conviction last week, Dustin Seaver Hazlewood of Galax walked out of court with a second chance.

    The 28-year-old former captain of the Wythe County Rescue Squad pleaded guilty to two felony charges, but a judge didn’t find him guilty — opting for an alternative plan that will require Hazlewood to complete community service and regularly appear in court for reviews of his progress.

  • State auditors praise Grayson Circuit Court

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County Circuit Court Clerk’s office recently received positive results from a completed audit of the county’s court system, which confirm that no deficiencies were found in the system from the January 2016 through March 31.

    Susan Herrington, Grayson clerk of the circuit court, recently shared two pieces of correspondence regarding the completion of the audit.

  • Sexual battery charge reduced to disorderly conduct

    INDEPENDENCE — Donald R. Munsey Jr., a former band director for the Grayson County School system, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct in Grayson County General District Court on Monday.

    Munsey, who resigned as band director on Jan. 19, was originally charged with sexual battery.

    After his plea on June 26, Munsey was sentenced to a 30-day suspended sentence. The judge suspended $400 of a $500 fine.

  • Nofsinger waives hearing on murder charges

    Staff Report

    Double homicide suspect Richard Denny Nofsinger of Galax has waived his right to a preliminary hearing on all charges, and his case will go directly to a grand jury.

    Nofsinger, 37, appeared in the Galax Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on June 22.

    He is charged with the first-degree murder of Alyssa A. Kenny, 28, and the capital murder of her infant daughter, Anastasia L. Alley, 21 months. The killings were reported on March 19, 2016, and Nofsinger was arrested on May 17, 2016, by members of the Galax Police Department.

  • Hillsville man indicted for child pornography

    HILLSVILLE – A Carroll County Circuit Court returned 105 grand jury indictments against 63 individuals on Monday. Included in those charges were 12 counts of possession of child pornography against a Hillsville man.

    Christopher Garry Brown, 43, of John Edwards Lane, was arrested Oct. 13, 2016, after an investigation by the Hillsville Police Department that involved the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
