  • Isom to serve 8 years for manslaughter

    HILLSVILLE — Whitney Lee Isom will serve eight years of a 10-year sentence in prison for an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter in the 2013 shooting death of Kevin Heath Frazier.

    Isom, 29, was sentenced in Carroll County Circuit Court on Wednesday, following a lengthy hearing.

    She was originally charged by direct indictment in December 2013 with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. The charges were placed after Frazier was shot and killed at 70 Rippey Hollow Road in Pipers Gap in October 2013.

    WYTHEVILLE — It started with the phone calls.

    Walter Buddy Gooslin of Woodlawn dialed up the Virginia State Police Wytheville headquarters several times early one morning in March 2013, and, in a series of rambling conversations, threatened to tear down the barracks, take a sledgehammer to a church, fire all the officers and “whoop every person in your whole town.”

  • Grayson indictments result in arrests

    INDEPENDENCE — Three more grand jury indictments have been unsealed and arrests made by the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department.

    The Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury met Oct. 24 and returned sealed indictments against several suspects.

    Two of the suspects arrested are prisoners at River North Correctional Center in Independence.

  • Carroll grand jury indicts 46 people

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll County grand jury returned a total of 103 indictments against 46 individuals on Dec. 8.

    Included in the inducements were three charges against Austin Kenneth Rupert Wagg, who was arrested in August after allegedly firing a weapon at an occupied vehicle in the Galax Food City parking lot near Pizza Hut.

  • Kemp waives hearing in shooting case

    HILLSVILLE — Benjamin Kemp of Woodlawn, who was charged in the malicious wounding of a Fries man, waived his right to a preliminary hearing in Carroll County General District Court last Friday.

    Kemp, 54, was arrested Oct. 4 after members of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department received a call reporting shots fired at the intersection of Sunnyside Road and Stable Inn Road, just south of the Town of Hillsville on U.S. 52.
