  • Grayson grand jury indicts 12

    INDEPENDENCE – Twelve people were indicted on 15 charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met last Friday.

    Nathan Willard Wagner, 24, of Galax, was indicted on two charges, statutory burglary and grand larceny.

    He allegedly entered 58 Grocery in Baywood and carried away lottery tickets, cigarettes and beer valued at more than $200.

    Other indictments included:

    • Amber Shaffer Bunn – possession of a schedule II controlled substance (meth).

  • Five charges in police chase sent to jury

    HILLSVILLE – Randall Chase Jones, a man allegedly involved in a police chase through Carroll County on Feb. 19, faces five felony charges that will be sent to a grand jury.

    Jones, 30, of Cana, originally was facing a lengthy list of 17 separate charges from the incident when he appeared in Carroll County General District Court on April 15. Jonathon Venzie represented Jones and requested all misdemeanor charges, except a first offense DWI, be dropped in exchange for prosecution of the five felonies.

  • Industrial vandalism case sent to grand jury

    Corey Dean Hodges’ case is set to go before a grand jury in Carroll County Circuit Court on June 20. Hodges is accused of vandalizing materials and equipment in the finishing tanks at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture’s Galax factory on Feb. 3, resulting in a weeklong plant shutdown and around a quarter million dollars in damage.

  • Police chase suspect to be evaluated

    HILLSVILLE – The Michigan man involved in an April 10 police chase in Hillsville now faces an additional charge and will be sent for an evaluation on his mental competency.

    Jason Andrew Broderick, 34, of Adrian, Mich., was charged after a chase through Hillsville that resulted in the total loss of a Hillsville Police Department vehicle. After law enforcement met with Commonwealth’s Attorney Nathan Lyons, an additional felony charge of attempted malicious assault on a law enforcement officer was placed against Broderick on April 15.

  • Bauguess pleads guilty, receives reduced charge

    HILLSVILLE – A North Carolina man charged in a March 1 breaking and entering incident in Cana appeared in court on Friday and pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor charge.

    Brandon Lee Bauguess, 37, of Ararat, N.C., was charged with breaking and entering and damaging property on March 1 after he allegedly threatened residents of a home in Cana with a hammer, according to police reports.

  • Prosecutor expects to seat jury quickly

    INDEPENDENCE — Jury selection for the murder trial of George Albert Harper III will begin on the morning of the trial, which is now set for the week of July 25 in Grayson County Circuit Court, according to Grayson Commonwealth’s Attorney Doug Vaught.

    Harper, who is charged in the 2002 shooting death of Galax High School student Brandon Billings, is the second suspect to be tried in this case. Last year, Chad Allen Reeves was put on trial for the murder, and was found not guilty.

  • Harper trial set for five days in July

    INDEPENDENCE — The trial date for George Albert Harper III, who is charged in the 2002 first-degree murder of Brandon Billings, will be held the week of July 25 in Grayson County Circuit Court, according to a review of the case last week.

    The Grayson County Circuit Court scheduled a review for Harper’s case on March 31, which Harper’s attorney, Edgar DeHart, said was to confirm everything was in order before the trial and to confirm the date.

    The courtroom has been reserved for five days.
