    ABINGDON – On Dec. 7, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon, a Galax man was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for knowingly failing to update his sex offender registration.

  • Inmate charged with assaulting guards

    INDEPENDENCE – A former prisoner at River North Correction Center in Independence was recently indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury for allegedly assaulting two corrections officers.

    The grand jury met in Independence on Oct. 23 and returned several sealed indictments.

    One of the indictments recently opened was against Marcus Allen Whitehead, 30, whose address is now listed as Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap.

  • Murder suspect charged with perjury

    INDEPENDENCE – A Galax man facing a murder charge in the 2002 death of a Galax High School student has been indicted for perjury by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.

    George Albert Harper III, 42, is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin on two charges, first-degree murder in the 2002 Brandon Billings murder case and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

    INDEPENDENCE – More people face charges following a meeting of the grand jury in Grayson County Circuit Court.

    Those indicted included:

    • Bradley Lee Phillips, 37, of Galax, for throwing missiles at an occupied vehicle.

    • Gary Lynn Ball, 47, of Galax, one count of larceny (construction fraud).

    • Vincent Lee Kirby, 48, one count of perjury.

  • Woolwine to serve 23 years in son's death

    HILLSVILLE – A Christiansburg man has been sentenced in Carroll County Circuit Court for charges stemming from an Oct. 31, 2014 accident that resulted in his son’s death.

    Christopher Dean Woolwine, 30, pleaded guilty in May to felony hit-and-run and second-degree murder in the traffic death of his four-year-old son, Cole Woolwine. Judge Brett Geisler sentenced Woolwine on Oct. 20.
