  • Man pleads guilty to stealing from elderly patient

    ABINGDON — A former companion care provider from Galax, hired to work with a social worker for the Grayson County Department of Social Services, pleaded guilty on Dec. 16 to federal fraud charges stemming from misuse of a debit card and theft from a bank account belonging to a patient the defendant was hired to care for.

  • Carroll grand jury issues indictments

    HILLSVILLE — One new charge has been placed against 21-year-old David Levelle Richardson of Galax, who is accused in the first-degree murder of a 27-year-old Hillsville man May 18.
    Richardson already faced charges of first-degree murder of Bryon Jordan Wilson, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling.

  • Hammer pleads guilty to another murder

    Convicted killer Frederick P. Hammer was in Ashe County Superior Court on Dec. 7, where he pleaded guilty to the shooting death of his nephew, Jimmy Blevins.
    Hammer, who is already serving seven life sentences without parole for the 2008 shooting deaths of three men in Grayson County, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the Blevins murder.

  • Thompson to serve 16 years for meth conspiracy

    ROANOKE — A Hillsville man will serve 16 years in federal prison for his part in a drug conspiracy.
    Bobby Dwayne Thompson heard his sentence in federal district court in Roanoke on Dec. 9.

  • Grayson: courts should decide Oracle's fate

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County leaders have decided to not revisit one of the most heated special use permit applications the county has seen in recent years.
    In a reversal of its previous action, the Grayson Board of Supervisors voted last Thursday not to re-hear the Oracle Institute’s application in July 2011.
    A couple of days after the board voted to give the non-profit, non-denominational group a second chance, Oracle Institute’s leader filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against the county.

  • Motion could result in AmerLink settlement

    WILSON, N.C. — Carroll County attorneys and AmerLink's bankruptcy trustee have jointly petitioned the federal court to allow the settlement involving the model home sales center to move ahead.
    Log home manufacturer AmerLink was supposed to create about 200 jobs in an economic development deal with Carroll County, but filed for bankruptcy in federal court instead.
