  • Coyote bounty scam suspect waives hearing

    INDEPENDENCE — James Edward Lawrence has waived his right to a preliminary hearing after being charged with defrauding Grayson County’s coyote bounty program.

    According to court records, Lawrence, 32, of Galax, was charged by game warden Jason Harris with fraud (obtaining money by false pretense in excess of $200).

    A preliminary hearing for Lawrence was to be held Monday in Grayson General District Court, but Lawrence waived his right to the hearing, sending the case directly to the grand jury, which meets again Oct. 23.

  • Former free clinic director pleads guilty to embezzling

    Former Free Clinic of the Twin Counties director Latonia Marshall pleaded guilty to four charges of felony embezzlement on Wednesday, according to the Carroll County Circuit Court.

    Marshall was charged with taking money from the Galax clinic. Marshall’s sentencing hearing is set for Nov. 10.

    She was indicted earlier this year by a grand jury in Carroll County. Marshall allegedly disposed, concealed or embezzled more than $200 worth of property from the clinic, according to the indictments.

  • Man pleads guilty to having drugs in jail

    PULASKI — A Galax man caught in a November drug transaction will have to serve two years in prison.

    According to the prosecution, William Estil Crigger, 36, told police he accompanied Randa Spencer on the transaction, but he thought they were going to rob the intended buyer rather than complete the methamphetamine transaction.

  • Woolwine plans to withdraw guilty plea

    HILLSVILLE – The attorney for a man charged with the homicide of his young son says his client intends to withdraw his guilty plea.

    Christopher Dean Woolwine, 30, of Christiansburg pleaded guilty May 26 in Carroll County Circuit Court to charges of hit-and-run and second-degree homicide in relation to an incident from Halloween of 2014.

    He was back in court last Thursday for pre-sentencing, but the hearing ended in a continuance.

  • Grayson grand jury opens sealed charges

    INDEPENDENCE – A Lansing, N.C., man has been indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury on five charges.

    The indictments against Jamie Matthew Eldreth, 35, were among the sealed indictments handed down by the grand jury that met July 24 and recently unsealed.

    Eldreth was indicted for eluding police, disregarding stop; reckless driving; driving on a suspended license; failure to display proper tag; and defective equipment.

  • Harper murder trial set for February

    INDEPENDENCE — A trial date has been set for George Albert Harper III of Galax, who is charged with first-degree murder in the 2002 shooting death of Brandon Billings.

    According to the Grayson County Circuit Court, Harper’s trial date has been set for the week of Feb. 8, 2016. The jury trial is expected to span the entire week.

    Harper’s trial will follow the three-day murder trial of Chad Allen Reeves, who was found not guilty of the same charge earlier this year.
