  • Carroll grand jury issues indictments

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County grand jury issued 62 indictments when it met Monday.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.
    Those named in the charges include:
    • Amanda Dawn Akers, abuse and neglect of a child
    • Eddie Ray Ayers, grand larceny of property belonging to Stephanie Hicks
    • Dustin Smokey, obtaining property by false pretenses from Cleona Etta Lineberry
    • Timothy Banks Brannock, grand larceny of a 2005 GMC Sierra, belonging to Eugene Keene Sr.; receiving stolen property

  • Developer charged with embezzling

    An Ashe County, N.C., developer who has connections with two developments in Grayson County has been arrested and charged with six counts of embezzlement.
    Lt. William Sands of the Ashe County Sheriff’s Department said Joe B. Weddington, 63, of Crumpler, N.C., was arrested Feb. 16.
    Sands said Weddington’s arrest came after a month-long investigation. The arrest was the result of $15,406.55 that Weddington allegedly converted to his own use.

  • Sweet to serve three years

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man will serve three years and be on probation for 20 years following a sentencing hearing in Grayson County Circuit Court on March 9.
    Fred Lee Sweet, 68, was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual battery during his trial on June 17, 2010. The offenses occurred in April 2007 and involved a girl who was five years old at the time.
    Sweet was registered with the Virginia Statewide Sex Offender Registry on March 1.

  • Fugitive's wife, family member charged

    ABINGDON — Two members of the Stiltner family will pay the price for one man's attempt to flee from his sentencing hearing in federal court in Greensboro last December.
    Jonathan Reed Stiltner, 36, of Fries, failed to appear for his sentencing in U.S. District Court in Greensboro, N.C., and U.S. Marshals almost caught up with him in a search at a home in Carroll County days later.
    Authorities finally located Jonathan and Chastity Stiltner in a motel room in Bluefield, W.Va., and arrested them Dec. 22, 2010.

  • Slate pleads guilty to federal drug charge

    ROANOKE — A 26-year-old Fancy Gap man has entered a guilty plea to a federal charge of dealing large amounts of methamphetamine.
    Richie Wayne Slate was charged last July, along with three codefendants, of conspiring "to distribute and possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine, a schedule II narcotic controlled substance," according to the federal indictment.
    On March 3, Slate appeared in federal court to plead guilty to the single charge he faced.
