  • Fugitive's wife, family member charged

    ABINGDON — Two members of the Stiltner family will pay the price for one man's attempt to flee from his sentencing hearing in federal court in Greensboro last December.
    Jonathan Reed Stiltner, 36, of Fries, failed to appear for his sentencing in U.S. District Court in Greensboro, N.C., and U.S. Marshals almost caught up with him in a search at a home in Carroll County days later.
    Authorities finally located Jonathan and Chastity Stiltner in a motel room in Bluefield, W.Va., and arrested them Dec. 22, 2010.

  • Slate pleads guilty to federal drug charge

    ROANOKE — A 26-year-old Fancy Gap man has entered a guilty plea to a federal charge of dealing large amounts of methamphetamine.
    Richie Wayne Slate was charged last July, along with three codefendants, of conspiring "to distribute and possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture or substance containing methamphetamine, a schedule II narcotic controlled substance," according to the federal indictment.
    On March 3, Slate appeared in federal court to plead guilty to the single charge he faced.

  • Drug dealer faces prison, deportation

    HILLSVILLE — A Hillsville man who police believe was a major drug dealer has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison and faces deportation when he gets out.
    Federal agents had sought search warrants for the home of Rigoberto Ruiz-Ruvalcaba of 328 Saddle Up Trail as early as April 2009.

  • Hall to serve 22 years for murder

    HILLSVILLE — Chad James Hall, 28, who shot his friend on the banks of Stewarts Creek in Lambsburg two years ago, will spend nearly 22 years in prison for the crime.
    As Hall described his state of mind in his sentencing hearing, he said he had been using methamphetamine and drinking beer on March 6, 2009, when he got into an argument with Justin Wade Edwards, 21, and shot him.

    Hall had previously pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder for intentional killing and use of a firearm.
