    District Court

    These sentences were recorded in July in the Carroll County General District Court Office, Hillsville. Sentences may be appealed:

  • Caudill will serve 3 years for dealing drugs near school

    HILLSVILLE — A 54-year-old man will serve three years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to dealing large amounts of drugs across the street from Woodlawn School.
    Charles Terry Caudill pleaded guilty to five of seven illegal drug-related charges that arose after Carroll County deputies searched his home at 604 Woodlawn Road in February 2009, according to court records.
    Authorities seized nearly six pounds of marijuana, 28 guns and $12,800 in cash after serving a search warrant there.

  • Carroll grand jury issues 91 indictments

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll grand jury issued 91 indictments after meeting Monday. Of those, nine were sealed by the court.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.
    • Lorna Jean Adams — obtaining property by false pretenses (nine counts); bad check (four counts)
    • Rudolph Sankey Barker — abuse and neglect of a child, possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony, eluding a law enforcement officer, violation of the habitual offender statute

  • Donithan pleads guilty to charges

    ROANOKE — A 32-year-old Galax man faces enhanced penalties after pleading guilty to illegal drug offenses where there were guns involved.
    Shannon Donithan appeared in federal court in Roanoke on Tuesday on a charge of conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine, court papers say.
    The maximum penalty that could arise includes a $10 million fine and a prison term of life, according to the plea agreement in the case.

  • Former CEO charged with embezzling

    The former CEO of the now-closed Independence Homes LLC has been indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury on embezzlement and money laundering charges.
    Joe B. Weddington, 63, of Crumpler, N.C., was indicted for the following charges:
    • one count of embezzlement of more than $200 but less than $11,500 from Independence Homes on or about Nov. 5, 2010
    • one count of embezzlement of more than $200 but less than $2,000 from Independence Homes on or about Dec. 6, 2010
