  • Montgomery to serve 3 years

    ROANOKE — A Galax man indicted on two illegal drug charges last November received a three-year federal prison term in sentencing proceedings Monday.
    Timothy Matthew Montgomery was originally charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine and possession with intent to distribute.
    In March, he entered a guilty plea to the conspiracy charge, which carried with it a maximum penalty of a $2 million fine and 40 years in prison, according to the plea agreement.

  • Davis to serve 16.5 years for drug conspiracy

    ROANOKE — A Galax woman caught in a conspiracy to sell illegal drugs was sentenced Monday to 198 months in a federal prison.
    Stephie Nicole Bean Davis had pleaded guilty to a federal charge of conspiring to distribute a mixture of or substance containing methamphetamine after being indicted in January.

  • Sawyers to serve 15 years

    ROANOKE — The first defendant to be sentenced, among several Twin County residents caught in a federal drug sting, has received 15 years in prison.

    Michael Samuel Sawyers of Galax was the first of five locals to be sentenced for his role in a conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine.
    Sawyers appeared before Judge James Turk in the U.S. District Court Monday after entering a guilty plea to the conspiracy charge.

  • Sweet sentencing delayed

    INDEPENDENCE — A sentencing hearing has been delayed for a Galax man convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual battery.
    Freddie Lee Sweet Jr., 67, was found guilty of both charges at a jury trial earlier this summer in Grayson County Circuit Court.

  • Grayson Circuit Court unseals indictments

    INDEPENDENCE — Three indictments that were sealed by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury on July 23 have been unsealed.
    An indictment indicates that a grand jury found evidence for a case to go to trial, and does not indicate guilt.
    Stanley D. Brewer, 46, of Fries, was indicted on five charges:
    • conspiracy to sell, give or distribute a schedule III controlled substance (hydrocodone)
    • sale, give or distribution of a schedule III controlled substance (hydrocodone)

  • Kennedy pleads guilty to drug charge

    ROANOKE — The last of several Twin County residents implicated in an illegal drug case pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Tuesday.
    With Kenneth Joe Kennedy signing a plea agreement in federal court, prosecutors have netted convictions against three Galax residents and two Hillsville men in 2010.

  • Former Grayson deputy indicted for sexual battery, rape

    INDEPENDENCE — A former Grayson County deputy sheriff was indicted on 14 sex-related charges last Friday by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.
    Shane Alan Widner, 33, was a sergeant when he was fired Jan. 13 by the sheriff’s department. He has been held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin since his arrest.
    Widner was indicted on two counts of rape, four counts of aggravated sexual battery, four counts of animate object sexual penetration, three counts of indecent liberties and one count of attempted inanimate object sexual penetration.
