  • Woman pleads guilty to embezzling from law firm

    ABINGDON – Patricia Ethel Chinault, 72, of Apopka, Fla., pleaded guilty to embezzling approximately $1 million from a Carroll County law firm on March 17, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Abingdon.

    Chinault previously lived in Carroll County and worked as a bookkeeper for the law firm. After she moved to Florida in 2009, Chinault continued to provide bookkeeping services for the firm.

  • Former guard pleads guilty, avoids jail

    ROANOKE — A 39-year-old Hillsville man will spend three years on probation for a crime involving drug distribution and firearms.

    Victor Lee Billings will face three years on probation and a special assessment of $100, after being convicted of illegal possession of a firearm while illegally using a controlled substance, According to Brian P. McGinn, a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District in Roanoke.

  • Motion denied in Jones case

    UPDATED 4/2/15:

    INDEPENDENCE — A motion to set aside a verdict finding Matthew Steven Jones guilty in the first-degree murder of his girlfriend, Desia Rae George, was denied Tuesday, after new evidence failed to convince the judge that the trial would have had a different outcome.

  • Carroll grand jury issues 22 indictments

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County grand jury issued 22 direct indictments against 10 individuals on March 16.

    After an investigation going back almost two years, William Michael Hazelwood Sr., 37, was indicted on two counts of statutory burglary, grand larceny, larceny of a firearm and destruction of property.

    According to the indictments, Hazelwood allegedly broke into two separate Carroll County homes in the daytime, with the intent to commit larceny.

  • Jones' attorney to introduce new evidence

    HILLSVILLE — Though he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison, Matthew Steven Jones has not had his last day in court.

    After a trial in Grayson County Circuit Court, Jones was found guilty in November of first-degree murder in the strangling death of his girlfriend, Desia Rae George, and sentenced March 6 to life in prison without parole, with an additional three years suspended and a $100,000 fine.

  • Father faces 2nd degree murder charge

    HILLSVILLE — Charges of murder, attempted murder and malicious wounding were included in the 72 indictments the Carroll grand jury certified against 40 individuals on Monday in Carroll County Circuit Court.

    Included in the stack of indictments were two charges — including a second degree murder charge — against Christopher Dean Woolwine of Christiansburg.
