  • Machete attack charge reduced to misdemeanor

    Staff Report

    Santos Hernandez, 22, charged with felony aggravated assault in a July incident involving a machete, appeared in Galax General District Court on the morning of Aug. 21.

    Hernandez was there to answer to charges of misdemeanor public intoxication and swearing, two counts of misdemeanor obtaining documents to make false statements (false ID) and misdemeanor attempted malicious wounding. The attempted malicious wounding was a felony, but was later reduced to the misdemeanor charge.

  • Mistrial declared in murder case

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County Circuit Court Judge Lee Harrell declared a mistrial on Wednesday in the murder case of Greyling Wayne “Beany” Davis.

    Davis, of Galax, allegedly shot two people in the Fairview section of Grayson County in 2016. His ex-girlfriend, Karen Cates, 41, died; David Patton was wounded.

    Davis’ trial for first-degree murder was set to begin Aug. 23. The declaration came at the request of Davis’s defense attorney, Jonathon Venzie, and was agreed to by Grayson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Doug Vaught.

  • Hodges found not guilty of factory sabotage

    HILLSVILLE – It took a grand jury about 10 minutes Wednesday to decide the fate of a Galax man accused of causing $1 million in damages through sabotage of a furniture plant.

    Cory Dean Hodges, 28, was charged with statutory burglary and destruction of property following an incident that occurred at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture in Galax on Feb. 3, 2016.

  • Lineberry in court for charge of manslaughter

    Staff Report

    INDEPENDENCE — Tanisha Ann Lineberry, charged in the vehicle death of her son, three year-old Jaylen Lineberry, was appointed legal counsel at a hearing in Grayson County Circuit Court on Aug. 17.

    According to court records, Lineberry has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, and abuse of a child resulting in serious injury.

    Her trial date is scheduled to be set on Oct. 27. According to the circuit court office, attorney J. Tompkins will represent Lineberry.

  • Grayson charges man with sexual abuse

    A man has been arrested on charges involving child sexual abuse, in an ongoing investigation.

    According to a news release from Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan, investigators responded July 20 to complaints of child sexual abuse, made against Adam Lee Haga, 44.

    Investigator Mico Davis interviewed Haga on July 26. The suspect was arrested and charged with forcible sodomy, a felony in Virginia, and taken before the magistrate for a bond hearing, Vaughan said.

  • Woman charged in son's death

    Staff Report

    FRIES — A Fries woman now faces charges after an investigation into the death of her son earlier this year.

    According to Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan, deputies responded to a call on April 30 at 286 Adder Lane in Fries, in reference to a child being struck by a vehicle.

    “Upon their arrival, the officers discovered that Tanisha Ann Lineberry, 24, ran over her three-year-old son, Jaylen Lineberry, while moving her car in the driveway,” according to a news release from Vaughan.
