  • Hancock to serve 6 years

    ROANOKE — A Hillsville man guilty of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in U.S. District Court will spend six years in a federal prison. Benjamin Lee Hancock, one of five locals convicted of a drug conspiracy charge, learned his fate at a sentencing hearing in Roanoke Oct. 14.

    Hancock's attorney argued against the defendant's sentencing being impacted by a contempt of court conviction from Carroll County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, brought up in the pre-sentencing report.

  • Probation revoked after assault

     INDEPENDENCE — An Ennice, N.C., woman was sentenced to serve five years in prison after her probation was revoked in Grayson County Circuit Court.

    Elizabeth Renea Pack, 33, was convicted Nov. 10, 2006 of possession of a schedule II controlled substance and uttering a forged check on Sept. 21, 2007. 

    She was sentenced to serve consecutive terms of two years and six months in prison on each of the two charges. The prison sentences were suspended and she was put on probation for five years.

  • Blair to serve 16 years for sex abuse

     INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man was sentenced to 50 years in prison in Grayson County Circuit Court on Oct. 8 for sexual abuse charges.

    Patrick Wayne Blair, 22, was convicted on four counts of carnal knowledge, two counts of consensual sodomy and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor at a trial held July 2.

    Blair already had been sentenced to serve jail time on a breaking and entering charge, according to prosecutors, and sexually abused two young females before reporting to jail.

  • Vaughan pleads guilty to conspiracy

     ROANOKE — A 53-year-old Galax man who fled the scene of a drug sting in April has admitted in court to being involved in a conspiracy to sell methamphetamine. 

    Donald Scott Vaughan — charged with conspiracy and four counts of distribution of meth, a schedule II drug — entered a guilty plea to the conspiracy charge in U.S. District Court in Roanoke on Tuesday.

  • Final appeal denied in double murder case

    The Virginia Supreme Court saw no grounds to consider the last-ditch appeal of a Carroll man convicted of murder in the Nov. 12, 2007, shooting deaths two teens in Fancy Gap.

    In late September, the supreme court declined to hear the appeal of Clinton Eric Burke, who had been found guilty in the deaths of George Adam Fulton, 19, and Dustin Bond, 17, at Fulton's mobile home on Frog Spur Road.
