  • Grayson pleads guilty to dealing meth

     ROANOKE — A 36-year-old Carroll County man snared in a drug trafficking conspiracy has pleaded guilty in federal court, but he reserves the right to argue down the amount of methamphetamine involved.

    Jesse William Grayson got caught up in the same investigation that led to the conviction of Donald Scott Vaughan, who fled from a drug sting at Interstate 77's Exit 14 at high speeds across western Carroll County.

  • Murder case sent to grand jury

     HILLSVILLE — People gathered at a Pipers Gap home on May 18 saw horseplay between David Levelle Richardson of Galax and Bryon Jordan Wilson escalate into something more violent.

    No witness saw the shooting that killed Wilson, because it happened in the bathroom of the home on Coal Creek Road. But a witnesses testifying at the preliminary hearing in Carroll County General District Court Friday agreed that, after a fight, Wilson picked up an object and followed Richardson into the bathroom.

  • Ex-police officer to serve 6 years on drug conviction

     ROANOKE — A former Pulaski police officer who admitted trafficking drugs has been given a sentence of 72 months in federal prison Monday.

    Christopher Franklin Bond, 33, who lived in Carroll County at the time of the offenses, had already pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to possess and distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine in U.S. District Court in Roanoke.

    On Monday, the court sentenced Bond and a co-defendant.

  • Oracle discrimination lawsuit proceeds

     INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County Board of Zoning Appeals and Zoning Administrator Lisa Barker have been dropped as defendants in a lawsuit that alleges the Board of Supervisors denied a special use permit for a spiritual retreat center because of religious beliefs.

    In June, the Board of Supervisors denied a special use permit for The Oracle Institute, which planned to build a non-denominational spiritual retreat center in the Wilson District.

  • Developer drops lawsuit

     HILLSVILLE — A private developer has dropped a lawsuit against the Carroll Public Service Authority that alleged tax credits were promised in return for a pump station in 2008.

    A pump station was mistakenly transferred to Weststar Investments with three acres off U.S. 58 as the company sought the land for development.

    The public service authority needs that pump station for the recently completed Woodlawn wastewater project to get sewage to Galax for treatment.

  • Drug charges filed in Carroll

      HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Circuit Court recently released these indictments, which had previously been sealed.

    It is common for the court to seal its paperwork until after the person named in the indictment has been served with warrants.

    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.

    Named in these indictments were:

    • John Ray Sutphin — possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug, issued in June 2008.

    • Kenneth Dale Dalton — possession of meth

  • Hall pleads guilty to stealing from elderly patients

    ABINGDON — A former senior social worker for Grayson County has pleaded guilty to charges related to her participation in a variety of fraudulent acts devised to steal money from a pair of elderly patients formerly in her care.

    She faces up to 30 years in federal prison on three charges.

    Jennifer Edward Hall, 36, of Galax was indicted by a federal grand jury in July and charged with one count of conspiracy to commit access devise fraud, three counts of access device fraud and one count of bank fraud.

  • Grayson issues indictments

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man was indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury last Friday on seven charges, including allegedly breaking into the home of Grayson Commonwealth’s Attorney Doug Vaught.
