  • Va. attorney general finds no conflict

    The Virginia Attorney General’s Office has found no conflict of interest after its review of whether an elected Carroll County supervisor can work for a company inspecting the Fancy Gap water and sewer project.
    This opinion comes after an appeal by Joshua Hendrick, the Laurel Fork District supervisor, who had worked with Nehemiah Engineering.
    The engineering firm had landed a contract with the Carroll Public Service Authority to provide construction inspection services on utility projects before Hendrick won his election.

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Circuit Court officials have released several unsealed indictments, relating to either illegal drug or sexual assault charges.
    An indictment is a formal charge obtained in the judicial process, not a finding of guilt.
    The court typically seals charges prior to the people named in them being served with warrants.

    District Court

  • Probation violation adds to prison sentence

    HILLSVILLE — A 23-year-old Galax man already sentenced to serve nine years in prison for manslaughter has gotten four more years added to his period of incarceration for a probation violation, according to the Carroll County prosecutor.
    David Levelle Richardson had already been convicted in Carroll County Circuit Court of the involuntary manslaughter of Bryon Jordan Wilson at a May 18, 2010, gathering at a home in Pipers Gap.

  • Deputy shooting suspects' case goes to grand jury

    INDEPENDENCE  — Charges against a Grayson County husband and wife charged in connection with the shooting of a Grayson County deputy sheriff were bound over for grand jury action following their preliminary hearings in Grayson County General District Court on Sept. 17.
    Deputy Doug Waller was wounded June 26 after he and Deputy Kevin Watson answered a domestic violence call at 3016 Skyline Highway, about six miles south of Galax on Virginia 89.

  • CVS robbery suspect pleads guilty

    HILLSVILLE — One day after being indicted by a Carroll County grand jury in the June 24 robbery of CVS in Galax, a 32-year-old New Millport, Penn., man has pleaded guilty in the case.
    Galax police sought Brian Richard Sloppy after a suspect entered the drug store on East Stuart Drive and gave a pharmacy technician a note that demanded schedule II prescription narcotics.
