  • Richardson murder trial underway

    The jury has recommended a total of nine years in prison for David Levelle Richardson: four years for the involuntary manslaughter, two years for discharging a firearm in the occupied dwelling and three years for use of a firearm.   • Carroll grand jury indicts 63 people

     

  • Morales to be deported after serving 188 months

    ROANOKE — A 29-year-old Galax man will serve 188 months in a federal prison for a drug-related conviction and then be deported, according to court papers.
    Juan Israel Morales was recently sentenced after pleading guilty to a charge of conspiracy to distribute of a large quantity of methamphetamine.
    An August 2011 federal indictment originally charged Morales with possession of meth with the intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in a drug trafficking crime, according to court papers.

  • Meth ring gets combined 89 years in prison

    ROANOKE — Six Twin County residents and a Wytheville man snared in a methamphetamine investigation have all pleaded guilty and will spend a combined 89 years in federal prisons, according to court records.
    A traffic stop on Arturo Velejan Hernandez of Independence by Grayson Deputy Alan Graham near Fries last year led to a search of the vehicle and the discovery of two ounces of meth.
    A combined operation by the Twin County and Claytor Lake drug task forces and Drug Enforcement Administration agents led to four federal indictments being issued in the case.
