  • Drug dealer faces prison, deportation

    HILLSVILLE — A Hillsville man who police believe was a major drug dealer has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison and faces deportation when he gets out.
    Federal agents had sought search warrants for the home of Rigoberto Ruiz-Ruvalcaba of 328 Saddle Up Trail as early as April 2009.

  • Hall to serve 22 years for murder

    HILLSVILLE — Chad James Hall, 28, who shot his friend on the banks of Stewarts Creek in Lambsburg two years ago, will spend nearly 22 years in prison for the crime.
    As Hall described his state of mind in his sentencing hearing, he said he had been using methamphetamine and drinking beer on March 6, 2009, when he got into an argument with Justin Wade Edwards, 21, and shot him.

    Hall had previously pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder for intentional killing and use of a firearm.

  • Automatic restoration of felons' rights fails in House

    RICHMOND — A House of Delegates subcommittee has rejected an attempt to amend the Virginia Constitution to allow automatic restoration of civil rights to nonviolent felons once they complete their criminal sentences.
    The House panel’s action signals that it is unlikely to be enacted this year in the General Assembly.
    That means Virginia will remain one of two states — Kentucky is the other  — that set the highest bar in the nation for felons to regain their rights of citizenship.

  • Galax man sentenced to 5 years for child porn

    ABINGDON — After taking a week to consider the case, a federal judge has sentenced a Galax man to five years in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography.
    Richard Lee Taylor, 38, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to the Internet child pornography charges. He received no plea agreement to lessen his sentence.

    Judge James P. Jones reviewed evidence in the week following a Jan. 19 sentencing hearing, and imposed the mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years for each of the two charges, which Taylor will serve concurrently.

  • Court unseals drug charges

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Circuit Court recently released several months' worth of sealed indictments, mostly dealing with drug cases.
    It's common practice for the courts to seal charges until those named can be served with warrants.
    Some unsealed indictments date back to the September 2010 meeting of the grand jury.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.

  • Indictments issued in traffic death, shooting incident

    INDEPENDENCE — A Crockett man was indicted last Friday on a charge of DUI involuntary manslaughter by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.
    Bradlee Erick Hahn, 21, was indicted as the result of a traffic accident that occurred on Clito Road on Aug. 28, 2010.
