  • Former registrar indicted for embezzlement

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indicted a former Grayson voter registrar on July 27 on one count of felony embezzlement.
    Debra Parks Phipps, 46, of Independence, was arrested on May 7. She also is charged with making a false statement to a criminal investigator, a misdemeanor.

  • Prisoner's release request denied

    INDEPENDENCE — A request to release a Galax man from jail and confine him to his home on electronic monitoring was denied following a hearing last Wednesday in Grayson County Circuit Court.
    Judge David Milesco listened to testimony for about half an hour before making his ruling.
    Fred Lee Sweet, 69, was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual battery during his trial on June 17, 2010. The alleged offenses occurred in April 2007 and involved a girl who was five years old at the time.

  • Richardson to serve 9 years for murder

    HILLSVILLE — David Richardson will serve 13 years, with four suspended, for the shooting death of a Carroll County man, Judge Brett Geisler ruled during a sentencing hearing in Carroll County Circuit Court on Tuesday.
    The jury had recommended nine years for the defendant, who was convicted of first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm in an occupied dwelling.
    Richardson fired three shots in a May 18, 2010 incident that resulted in the death of Bryon Jordan Wilson.

  • Court releases sealed charges

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Circuit Court officials recently released these unsealed indictments.
    Courts often seal charges by direct indictment until the person named can be served with warrants. An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.
    Those named in the unsealed indictments include:
    • Joseph Linwood Burton, possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug.
    • Stanley Davis Brewer, 12 counts of obtaining drugs by false pretenses
    • Desiree Jordan Oakley, distribution of hydrocodone, a schedule III drug
