  • Texas man pleads guilty in fatal crash case

    WYTHEVILLE — A 44-year-old commercial truck driver from Houston, Texas, pleaded guilty in an Oct. 30 wreck that killed a Hillsville man.
    Virginia State Police charged Donald Ray Alexander with involuntary manslaughter in a vehicle after the driver attempted to use a crossover on Interstate 77 near the 44 mile marker.
    He was trying to change from the northbound lanes to go southbound when his flatbed tractor-trailer pulled into the path of a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, driven by John Schrader, 56, of Hillsville, according to an accident report.

  • Wheatley found guilty in deputy shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County man was found guilty of three charges in Grayson Circuit Court on May 17 in connection with the shooting of Deputy Sheriff Doug Waller in June 2012.
    Gary Frank Wheatley, 45, was found guilty of one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.

  • Howard awaiting murder trial in N.C.

    RALEIGH, N.C. — Nearly a year after Sonny Lee Howard was arrested in Galax with his wife’s body in the back of his truck, the North Carolina man is still awaiting trial for first-degree murder.
    Howard, 43, was stopped by Galax police in the city on May 23, 2012, after Wake County, N.C., authorities issued an alert that Howard was a suspect in the death of his wife, Sherry Lee Howard, 50.
    According to a search warrant, Howard told the Galax officers that he had killed his wife.

  • Program saves prisoners' lives, county's money

    INDEPENDENCE – Three years ago, Grayson County took the chance on a new alternative sentencing program that very few localities had tried. Today, the Day Report Center has provided the county a net savings of $149,000 and rising.
    Supervisors Chairman Mike Maynard remembers when a representative from Giles County came and spoke to Grayson officials about a Day Report Program, designed to keep non-violent offenders out of jail and help rehabilitate them into productive citizens.

  • Reid pleads guilty in officer assault

    HILLSVILLE — A 52-year-old Floyd County man indicted for attempted capital murder of a Carroll deputy pleaded guilty to two felony assault and battery charges in circuit court Monday.

  • Grayson grand jury indicts 20

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indicted 20 people on a variety of charges on April 26, including forgery, larceny, abduction, child abuse and drug possession.
    Jeffery Alan Brannock was charged with one count of statutory burglary, grand larceny, forgery, uttering a forged document and obtaining money by fraud. Specifically, he was charged with breaking and entering the home or property of Mary Brannock with the intent to commit larceny. He allegedly stole jewelry valued at more than $200 from Mary Brannock and Rachel Williams.
