  • Hearing delayed in dog mauling case

    INDEPENDENCE — A preliminary hearing date has been set for Terra Connell and John Underwood of Independence, who both face several charges in the Jan. 6 dog attack that resulted in the death of 15-month-old Payton Lyrik Sawyers.

    On Aug. 23, Connell, 29, will attend a preliminary hearing at Grayson County General District Court for a charge of owning a vicious dog, as well as a charge of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.

  • Man pleads guilty to federal drug charge

    Staff Report

    ROANOKE – A Galax man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to federal drug trafficking charges.

    In the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke on May 10, Sylvester Monroe Jackson, 42, of Galax, entered a guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.

  • Grayson welcomes Henck to legal staff

    INDEPENDENCE ― The Grayson County Commonwealth’s Attorney office recently welcomed a new staff member with a passion for law, politics and humanitarian efforts; and an extensive resume that stretches overseas.
    Evan Henck, a former legal director for Freedom Firm in India, moved to the Grayson County area with his wife, Leah, and their children in January. He began his employment with the attorney’s office Feb. 1.

  • Former rescue captain from Galax faces 31 drug charges

    WYTHEVILLE — The former captain of the Wythe County Rescue Squad is facing 31 counts of obtaining drugs by fraud, deceit and/or forgery.

    On April 18, a grand jury handed down direct indictments against 27-year-old Dustin Hazlewood of Galax, accusing him of obtaining fentanyl and morphine, to which he had access as an employee of the WCRS and as a volunteer with Guardian Ambulance Service in Wytheville.

  • Grayson grand jury indicts 12

    INDEPENDENCE – Twelve people were indicted on 15 charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met last Friday.

    Nathan Willard Wagner, 24, of Galax, was indicted on two charges, statutory burglary and grand larceny.

    He allegedly entered 58 Grocery in Baywood and carried away lottery tickets, cigarettes and beer valued at more than $200.

    Other indictments included:

    • Amber Shaffer Bunn – possession of a schedule II controlled substance (meth).

  • Five charges in police chase sent to jury

    HILLSVILLE – Randall Chase Jones, a man allegedly involved in a police chase through Carroll County on Feb. 19, faces five felony charges that will be sent to a grand jury.

    Jones, 30, of Cana, originally was facing a lengthy list of 17 separate charges from the incident when he appeared in Carroll County General District Court on April 15. Jonathon Venzie represented Jones and requested all misdemeanor charges, except a first offense DWI, be dropped in exchange for prosecution of the five felonies.
