  • Five sentenced for drug conspiracy

    ABINGDON — Five local people were sentenced to prison last week, resulting from a federal investigation into a local methamphetamine distribution network.

    The charges resulted from a joint federal, state and local investigation called Operation Rolling Thunder.

    They were sentenced in the Western District of Virginia Federal Court in Abingdon, on charges of conspiracy to distribute meth. All pleaded guilty last year to the drug charges.

  • Burglary suspect caught on trail camera

    HILLSVILLE – Several felony warrants have resulted in indictments by Carroll County Circuit Court regarding a series of repetitive burglary offenses.

    The first of these incidences occurred back on Nov. 9, when a local business was broken into and an array of items were taken.

    Hillsville Police Department (HPD) has been investigating the situation, and after a second reported burglary at the same address on Jan.14, law enforcement decided to set up surveillance at the location to gain additional information.

  • Grayson opens sealed indictments

    INDEPENDENCE – Indictments against eight suspects have been unsealed in Grayson County.

    The suspects were indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met in Independence on Jan. 26 and the charges sealed until arrests were made.

    Chad William Bourne, 27, who listed his address as River North Correctional Center in Independence, was indicted for a prisoner tampering within the correctional unit.

  • Eisenhauer sentencing hearing postponed

    Staff Report

    CHRISTIANSBURG — A judge has granted a defense motion to postpone a sentencing hearing for David Eisenhauer, found guilty earlier this month of murdering 13-year-old Nicole Lovell.

    Eisenhauer, who is from Maryland but listed Galax as his home address to claim in-state tuition, pleaded no contest to killing the teen in 2016 and hiding her body in Surry County, N.C., just south of the Grayson County line. He could face life in prison for those crimes, plus abduction.

  • Arson dismissed, Rose guilty of other charges

    INDEPENDENCE — David Christopher Rose, charged in connection with the 2017 apartment fire at the former Ogle’s Deli in Independence, was found guilty of grand larceny, statutory burglary (in the nighttime) and violation of a protective order in Grayson County Circuit Court on Feb. 9; while other charges, including arson, were dismissed by the judge.

  • Business owners convicted of tax evasion

    Staff Report

    HILLSVILLE — A local couple faces a prison term and restitution after being convicted of tax evasion and conspiracy charges in federal court.

    In January, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia convicted Jeffrey and Karen Dalton of Hillsville of tax evasion and conspiring to structure currency transactions, according a news release from the U.S. Justice Department.
