  • Ex-police officer sentenced in sex-for-leniency case with local tie

    SALEM — A former Salem police officer will serve two-and-a-half years in prison for soliciting sexual favors in exchange for the promise of lenient sentences, and planning the acts with a cooperating defendant in Carroll County.

    In December 2014, former police detective Kevin Christopher Moore of Roanoke County pleaded guilty to soliciting and receiving sexual favors from a cooperating defendant, in exchange for recommending a more lenient sentence.

  • Woman charged with embezzling from rescue squad

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax woman has been indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury for allegedly embezzling funds from the Baywood Search and Rescue Squad.

    Nancy Lane Christman, 51, was one of those named in several sealed indictments handed down by the grand jury that met Jan. 22. The indictments were recently unsealed after the suspects were charged.

  • Wagg to serve 3 years for shooting into vehicle

    HILLSVILLE — Austin Kenneth Rupert Wagg of Galax was sentenced to three years in prison in Carroll County Circuit Court last Thursday.

    Wagg was arrested on Aug. 20, 2014, after a witness notified police that Wagg was firing a weapon at a vehicle in the Food City parking lot in Galax. Police followed Wagg’s vehicle and stopped him. A 9 mm pistol was recovered during the stop.

  • Grayson grand jury indicts 12

    INDEPENDENCE — A Jefferson, N.C., man was indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury Jan. 23 on four counts of carnal knowledge.

    Connor Allen Lewis, 20, was indicted on charges involving a 14-year-old girl. He will be represented by Dublin attorney Michael Barbour.

    An indictment indicates that a grand jury found sufficient evidence for a case to go to trial, and does not indicate guilt. All of those indicted are innocent until proven guilty.

  • Galax woman sentenced for fraud

    ABINGDON — Tamara Parnell, 36, of Galax, recently was sentenced to four months of imprisonment, three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $34,899 in restitution after pleading guilty to Social Security fraud.

    The sentencing was handed down in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon. After waiving her right to be indicted, Parnell had pleaded guilty in May 2014 to two counts of knowingly and willfully converting to her own use Social Security payments to another person for whom she was the representative payee.
