  • Cana man pleads guilty to drug charge

    Staff Report

    ROANOKE — A man from Cana has pleaded guilty to a federal drug conspiracy charge, according to U.S. Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr.

    Rebel Steiner Akers, 59, pleaded guilty June 29 in U.S. District Court in Roanoke to one count of conspiring to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.

    “We will continue to devote all appropriate resources to combating the rise of methamphetamine trafficking in Southwest Virginia,” Fishwick said in a news release.

  • Federal court: restroom rules violate constitution

    RICHMOND ― A federal district court in Virginia last week ordered the Gloucester County School Board to let a transgender student use the same restrooms as other boys at his school.

    The June 23 ruling could have an impact on a restroom policy the Grayson County School Board approved in May, which says all students must use the restroom that matches the gender listed on their birth certificate.

    The student in the Gloucester case was born female, but identifies as male.

  • Galax man indicted for burglary, larceny

    INDEPENDENCE – A Galax man has been indicted on two charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury, according to court records unsealed after nearly a year.

    According to court records, Bobby Lee Hawks, 29, was indicted on charges of statutory burglary of property owned by Aaron Phillips and grand larceny. The grand jury met July 24, 2015 and returned the indictments, which were sealed until now.

  • Factory vandalism, manslaughter suspects indicted

    HILLSVILLE – A Carroll County grand jury returned 87 indictments against 54 individuals on June 20.

    Included in the indictments were two charges against Corey Dean Hodges, 27, of Galax. Hodges’ charges of destruction of property and statutory burglary stemmed from a Feb. 3 incident at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture.

  • Anderson pleads guilty to embezzlement, forgery

    INDEPENDENCE -- A former secretary and bookkeeper at Grayson County High School has pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from school and other accounts.
    Shelia Wood Anderson of Mouth of Wilson pleaded guilty last Thursday to six felony charges: three counts of embezzlement and three counts of forgery/uttering.
    Anderson was indicted on the six charges Oct. 23, 2015, by a Grayson County grand jury.

  • Nofsinger indicted by federal grand jury

    Staff Reports

    ABINGDON — Double homicide suspect Richard Denny Nofsinger Jr. made his initial appearance in federal court at a nine-minute hearing on Monday to answer for child sexual exploitation charges.

    The nine-minute hearing in the U.S. District Court in Abingdon was related to federal charges placed after Nofsinger was arrested in connection with the killings of a Galax infant and her mother.
