  • Phipps pleads guilty to fraud

    INDEPENDENCE — The former Grayson County voting registrar has pleaded guilty in Grayson County Circuit Court to one count of credit card fraud.
    Debra Parks Phipps, 47, of Independence,  is accused of using a county credit card to make unauthorized purchases.
    She entered a plea on Jan. 25 before Judge Brett Geisler. Under the rules of the Alford Plea, Phipps does not admit the act, but admits that the prosecution could likely prove the charge.

  • Grayson grand jury indicts 12

    INDEPENDENCE — A  Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury on Jan. 25 indicted 12 people on a variety of charges.
    An indictment indicates that a grand jury found sufficient evidence for a case to go to trial and does not indicate guilt. All of those indicted are innocent until proven guilty.
    Anthony Allen Bobbitt was indicted for possession of a schedule II controlled substance (meth), statutory burglary and possession of burglary tools. He was charged with breaking and entering the home of Andrew K. Boles.

  • Vaughn pleads guilty to escape charge

    HILLSVILLE — Toby Vaughn, 24, of Woodlawn pleaded guilty to escaping police custody in Carroll County Circuit Court on Wednesday afternoon.
    Carroll County Deputy Barry Lineberry took Vaughn into custody after pulling him over on Aug. 29, 2012. Vaughn had an outstanding misdemeanor charge of destroying cemetery property, according to police reports.
    Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Jones told Judge Brett Geisler that Lineberry had put Vaughn in handcuffs at the time of his escape.

  • Tire theft charges dismissed

    INDEPENDENCE — A husband and wife arrested in connection with the alleged theft of four tires from Independence Tire have had their grand larceny charges dismissed.
    Ezra Allen Royal, 55, and Nellie Victoria Lisle Royal, 44, both of Galax, appeared in Grayson County General District Court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 14.
    The felony charges were dismissed after the judge found no evidence to send the case to a grand jury.

  • Abduction, rape charges dropped

    HILLSVILLE — Travis Slusher, 30, of Cana, was found not guilty of two abduction charges and one rape charge, and guilty of carnal knowledge, at a jury trial Jan. 14 in Carroll County Circuit Court.
    Slusher was arrested on Aug. 26, 2011, after the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department investigated reports of the abduction and rape of two minors, one under the age of 13.
