  • Wheatley sentenced in deputy shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — The man found guilty of shooting Grayson County Deputy Doug Waller in an incident that occurred in June 2012 will serve a total of 11 years in prison, after he was sentenced last Thursday in Grayson County circuit court.
    Gary Frank Wheatley, 45, of 3016 Skyline Highway in the Fairview community, was found guilty on one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony in his trial in May.

  • Pulaski man found guilty of manslaughter

    PULASKI — A Max Meadows man entered a no contest plea in Pulaski County Circuit Court last Friday, in connection with a Virginia 100 crash last September that killed a 26-year-old Hillsville woman.
    Dustin Keith Hodge, 24, was charged with involuntary manslaughter by direct indictment last November, two months after the Sept. 15, 2012, accident that killed Misty Dawn Davis, according to police reports and court records.

  • Gold theft charges headed to grand jury

    HILLSVILLE ― Carroll’s grand jury will consider charges against a 28-year-old Austinville man involving the theft of cash, collectible coins and small gold bars from a Carroll County residence last winter.
    Investigators with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office charged two in the case, including Isaac Charles Edwards.
    Deputies arrested Edwards March 7 after traveling to Hilo, Hawaii, where the Austinville resident was being detained by authorities.

  • Conviction in carjacking, attempted murder case

    HILLSVILLE — A Woodlawn man charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder avoided a two-day jury trial in Carroll County Circuit Court by pleading guilty to six felonies on Friday.
    Richard Austin Williams faced two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of attempted carjacking, one count of using a firearm while attempting to commit a carjacking, two counts of using a firearm while attempting to commit murder and two counts of abduction by force and intimidation.

  • Linville gets 5 years for rape of minor

    HILLSVILLE — A former Galax business owner will serve five years in prison after being convicted in June of raping a 12-year-old.
    A jury in Carroll County Circuit Court had found Jimmy Ray Linville, 52, guilty in a two-day trail in March.
    Galax police charged Linville after receiving a report from the female minor and her family.
