  • Three women plead guilty in stolen lottery tickets case

    HILLSVILLE — A 2009 case involving embezzlement of Lottery tickets from Blue Ridge Tobacco and Candle moved closer to resolution with pleas from the three accused women on April 15.
    Amy Carrico Roberts of Galax, Holly Dawn Kelly Jennings of Fancy Gap and Carolyn Kaye Lane of Fancy Gap had each been brought up in two rounds of indictments in Carroll County Circuit Court in the incident, according to court records.
    (An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.)

  • Grimes pleads guilty in death of Grayson man

    INDEPENDENCE — A 60-year-old Fries man will spend four years in the Virginia Department of Corrections after his arrest on charges related to the March 22, 2012, death of an unattended person.
    Donald S. Grimes faced multiple charges in Grayson County Circuit Court after investigators responded to 70 Springwood Lane in the Carsonville community and found Gary R. Vaughan, 57, deceased in his residence.

  • Two sentenced on federal meth charges

    ROANOKE — Two Twin County residents learned their sentences in federal court recently after being brought up on methamphetamine-related drug charges.
    Mickey Lee Thomas, 23, of Galax and Barbara Lynn Bedwell, 37, of Elk Creek were two of eight defendants charged in an indictment issued by a federal grand jury last February on drug related offenses.

  • Firearms convictions add to McMillian's sentence

    HILLSVILLE — A Cana man who already had been sentenced to five years in prison tripled that period of incarceration after pleading guilty to additional charges March 21.
    On his third appearance in Carroll County Circuit Court before substitute Judge Robert Turk, Glen Donald McMillian pleaded guilty to three charges on that day.

  • Davis convicted of more abduction charges

    WYTHEVILLE — A 61-year-old Ivanhoe man, already serving a 28-year sentence on a rape conviction in Carroll County, received another 25 years in prison for related convictions in Wythe County.
    Alton Kenny Davis, a former driver for Guardian ambulance service, faced several charges in a Wythe County investigation that spread to Carroll County in 2008, involving Mount Rogers Industrial and Developmental Center clients.
    Davis provided transportation services to the disabled through his position with Guardian.
