  • Former newspaper carrier pleads guilty

    A former newspaper carrier has pleaded guilty to tampering with a coin-operated newspaper vending machine in Galax.
    Terry Wayne Hale, 49, of Mount Airy, N.C., pleaded guilty June 10 to the tampering charge in Galax Combined Courts.
    Hale was sentenced by a judge to 12 months in jail, which was suspended, according to court records. He was placed on probation for one year.
    The vending machine was owned by the Winston-Salem Journal.

  • Man charged in I-77 tow truck driver fatality

    HILLSVILLE — Jesse Tang of Rural Hall, N.C., has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a recent fatality that took place on Interstate 77.
    Russell Nelson, 75, owner of Russell’s Garage in Hillsville, was killed on May 25 while assisting a disabled vehicle on I-77.

  • Linville sentencing delayed

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Circuit Court has confirmed that it will be several more weeks before a sentence is handed down to Jimmy Ray Linville, a Galax man who was found guilty of raping a 12-year-old.
    Linville, 52, was arrested at his business, Tropical Tanning Salon, on March 28, 2012, after the Galax Police Department investigated a report from a minor and her family. He was convicted after a jury trial June 6 and 7.

  • Man indicted on attempted murder charge

    HILLSVILLE — A suspect who led Carroll deputies on a 30-minute chase after trying to escape from a circuit court hearing had nine indictments issued against him when the grand jury met Monday.
    Richard Wilson Garrett, then 36, formerly of Gladesboro Road, had been in court that day in March 2012 on breaking and entering and larceny charges.
    At about 9:30 a.m., while a deputy was moving several prisoners from the lockup to take to circuit court, Garrett allegedly escaped out of the sally port.

  • Woman sentenced for role in CVS robbery

    HILLSVILLE — A co-conspirator in the June 2012 robbery of CVS Pharmacy in Galax will serve 2.5 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections for her part in the armed robbery that netted a variety of narcotics.
    Renee Sue Lucas, formerly of Follansbee, W.Va., appeared in Carroll County Circuit Court for sentencing on Monday after entering a no-contest plea in April.
    Judge Brett Geisler wasted no time in approving a sentencing agreement that defense attorney Brad Dalton had reached with the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.

  • Jury finds Galax man guilty of rape

    UPDATED 6/11/13: A jury has recommended a five-year prison sentence for Jimmy Linville, after he was found guilty in a Carroll County Circuit Court trial of raping a 12-year-old.
    Linville, 52, of Galax, was arrested at his business, Tropical Tanning Salon, on March 28, 2012, after the Galax Police Department investigated a report from the minor and her family.
    His jury trial was June 6 and 7. Linville will be sentenced at a hearing in Carroll County Circuit Court on June 18 at 1 p.m.
