  • Brown sentenced on abduction charges

    MARION — After a jury was seated in Smyth County Circuit Court late last Thursday morning for what was scheduled to be a two-day trial, Michael Ray Brown Jr., 38, of Galax took an Alford plea and was sentenced on two charges from 2011 in the abduction of Nathan Cord Combs, and two charges from 2008, Commonwealth's Attorney Roy Evans said.

  • Hill to serve 2 years for check fraud

    ABINGDON — A Hillsville woman will serve two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to counterfeit check fraud charges.
    Regina Hines Hill was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Abingdon on Dec. 12. Judge James P. Jones imposed a sentence of 24 months on each count, to run concurrently. Hill will also be on probation for three years following her release from prison and will have to pay nearly $24,000 in restitution to a bank.
