  • Woman sentenced for role in CVS robbery

    HILLSVILLE — A co-conspirator in the June 2012 robbery of CVS Pharmacy in Galax will serve 2.5 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections for her part in the armed robbery that netted a variety of narcotics.
    Renee Sue Lucas, formerly of Follansbee, W.Va., appeared in Carroll County Circuit Court for sentencing on Monday after entering a no-contest plea in April.
    Judge Brett Geisler wasted no time in approving a sentencing agreement that defense attorney Brad Dalton had reached with the commonwealth’s attorney’s office.

  • Jury finds Galax man guilty of rape

    UPDATED 6/11/13: A jury has recommended a five-year prison sentence for Jimmy Linville, after he was found guilty in a Carroll County Circuit Court trial of raping a 12-year-old.
    Linville, 52, of Galax, was arrested at his business, Tropical Tanning Salon, on March 28, 2012, after the Galax Police Department investigated a report from the minor and her family.
    His jury trial was June 6 and 7. Linville will be sentenced at a hearing in Carroll County Circuit Court on June 18 at 1 p.m.

  • Texas man pleads guilty in fatal crash case

    WYTHEVILLE — A 44-year-old commercial truck driver from Houston, Texas, pleaded guilty in an Oct. 30 wreck that killed a Hillsville man.
    Virginia State Police charged Donald Ray Alexander with involuntary manslaughter in a vehicle after the driver attempted to use a crossover on Interstate 77 near the 44 mile marker.
    He was trying to change from the northbound lanes to go southbound when his flatbed tractor-trailer pulled into the path of a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, driven by John Schrader, 56, of Hillsville, according to an accident report.

  • Wheatley found guilty in deputy shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County man was found guilty of three charges in Grayson Circuit Court on May 17 in connection with the shooting of Deputy Sheriff Doug Waller in June 2012.
    Gary Frank Wheatley, 45, was found guilty of one count of attempted first-degree murder, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and one count of use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.

  • Howard awaiting murder trial in N.C.

    RALEIGH, N.C. — Nearly a year after Sonny Lee Howard was arrested in Galax with his wife’s body in the back of his truck, the North Carolina man is still awaiting trial for first-degree murder.
    Howard, 43, was stopped by Galax police in the city on May 23, 2012, after Wake County, N.C., authorities issued an alert that Howard was a suspect in the death of his wife, Sherry Lee Howard, 50.
    According to a search warrant, Howard told the Galax officers that he had killed his wife.

  • Program saves prisoners' lives, county's money

    INDEPENDENCE – Three years ago, Grayson County took the chance on a new alternative sentencing program that very few localities had tried. Today, the Day Report Center has provided the county a net savings of $149,000 and rising.
    Supervisors Chairman Mike Maynard remembers when a representative from Giles County came and spoke to Grayson officials about a Day Report Program, designed to keep non-violent offenders out of jail and help rehabilitate them into productive citizens.
