  • Indictments unsealed in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Circuit Court recently released a number of unsealed indictments.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt. Indictments are typically sealed by the court until the persons named within can be served with warrants.
    Those named in the unsealed indictments include:
    • Oran Miles Mabe - possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug
    • MacKenzie Fallon Gunsaulis - possession of meth and possession of a firearm while in possession of a schedule II drug

  • Grayson grand jury issues 17 indictments

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indicted 17 people on Jan. 24.
    Rhonda Weagle and Christina Dawn Smith were each charged with grand larceny and statutory burglary for breaking into the home of Tanya Lundy and stealing property valued at more than $200.
    Other charges included:
    • Zachary Lee Funk – possession of stolen property
    • Kayla LeAnn Patino – possession of stolen property

  • Carjacker sentenced to 22 years in prison

    BHILLSVILLE — A Woodlawn man who attempted to steal a vehicle from the parking lot of Dawn Auction at gunpoint — but instead ended up getting shot himself  — got 22 years in prison at a sentencing hearing last week.

    HILLSVILLE — A defense attorney in the case of a 28-year-old woman accused of second-degree murder has petitioned the Carroll County Circuit Court for a discovery hearing.

  • Jones will return to Virginia for murder trial

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County authorities received word late last Friday that murder suspect Matthew Jones will be extradited to Virginia to stand trial for charges related to his girlfriend’s death last year.

  • Murder charges placed in 11-year-old crime

    INDEPENDENCE — Charges have been placed in the 11-year-old unsolved murder case of Brandon Billings, a Galax High School student and football player found shot to death in his truck in 2002.
    According to Grayson Commonwealth’s Attorney Doug Vaught, a special grand jury convened by the Grayson County Circuit Court returned indictments charging that Chad Allen Reeves, 33, and George Albert Harper III, 40, did “with malice aforethought, kill and murder” Kyle Brandon Billings at some time between Oct. 5 and 6, 2002.

  • TWO CHARGED FOR MURDER IN BILLINGS CASE

    INDEPENDENCE — Charges have been placed in the 11-year-old unsolved murder case of Brandon Billings, a Galax High School student found shot to death in his truck in 2002.

    According to Grayson Commonwealth's Attorney Doug Vaught, a Special Investigative Grand Jury convened by the Grayson County Circuit Court returned separate indictments charging that Chad Allen Reeves, 33, and George Albert Harper III, 40, did “with malice aforethought, kill and murder” Kyle Brandon Billings at some time between Oct. 5 and 6, 2002.
