  • Howard pleads guilty to wife's murder

    RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina fugitive arrested in Galax last year with his wife’s body in the back of his truck has been found guilty of second-degree murder and is now in prison, according to a representative of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office.  
    According to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Sonny Howard, 44, was convicted on June 28 of killing his wife, 50-year-old Sherry Howard, after pleading guilty to the crime.

  • Grayson will handle George murder case

    Law enforcement officials could charge by indictment a suspect in the death of a 33-year-old Fries woman. If so, the charge would be placed and prosecuted in Grayson County.
    Investigators in both Carroll and Grayson counties have been looking into the disappearance and subsequent death by homicide of Desia Rae George. A cause of death has not be released.

  • Goin to serve time for drugs, eluding police

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man will serve three years and nine months in prison on a drug charge and another year on an unrelated conviction of eluding police.
    Kevin Goin, 33, of Fries Road, was sentenced on Sept. 13 in Grayson County Circuit Court to five years in jail for an incident this summer in which he crashed his motorcycle through a police roadblock during a chase. Four years were suspended.

  • Carroll indictments include murder charge

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County grand jury issued 81 indictments while meeting Monday, including formal charges against a 31-year-old Woodlawn man accused of murder and a 23-year-old Woodlawn man accused of an attempted carjacking in Galax.
    Eight indictments were sealed by the court, until warrants could be served.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.

  • Murder case sent to grand jury

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll grand jury will consider a charge of first-degree murder against a 31-year-old Woodlawn man during its September term.
    The case involves the Feb. 8 death of 45-year-old Delphie Willey.
    Jesse James Owens appeared in Carroll County General District Court on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing on charges of first-degree murder, use of a firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of a gun by a non-violent felon.

  • Former bus driver dies before DUI hearing

    HILLSVILLE — The 52-year-old Galax man who faced two misdemeanor charges after allegedly driving a school bus while intoxicated has died.
    Ricky Lee Phillips was charged with a first offense of driving a commercial motor vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving after a traffic stop June 14.
    A citizen following the bus reported to the police that it was being driven erratically before the traffic stop.
