  • Trio sentenced in lottery ticket scheme

    HILLSVILLE — Three former employees of Blue Ridge Tobacco and Candle in Galax have been ordered to pay restitution of more than $120,000 after pleading guilty in a case involving embezzlement from the business.
    Amy Carrico Roberts of Galax, Holly Dawn Kelley of Fancy Gap and Carolyn Kaye Lane of Fancy Gap were indicted in Carroll County Circuit Court in 2009, according to court records.

  • Bond set at $1 million for murder suspect

    ASHEBORO, N.C. — Bond for a man charged with murder in connection with the death of his girlfriend has been increased to $1 million.
    Grayson County Chief Deputy David Ashby said Matthew Steven Jones, 36, was indicted Oct. 25 by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury and charged with murder in connection with the death of Desia Rae George.

    HILLSVILLE — The Carroll County Circuit Court recently released these unsealed indictments.
    An indictment is not a finding of guilt, merely a formal criminal charge.

    Those named in the unsealed indictments include:
    • Matthew Charles Hall - possession of methamphetamine, a schedule II drug
    • Donald Robert Burcham - possession of meth

  • Company settles sexual harassment suit

    ROANOKE — Saltville-based Southwest Virginia Community Health System Inc. (SVCHS) will pay $30,000 to settle a Grayson County sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Commission (EEOC), the agency recently announced.
    The EEOC’s suit alleged that Karen Ross, a female receptionist at SCVHS’s Troutdale clinic in Grayson, which closed last year, was sexually harassed by a male patient during her employment there.

  • Grayson grand jury charges 11

    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indicted 11 people on 31 charges last Friday.
    Richard Otto Alley of Galax was indicted on six counts of forgery and six counts of uttering a forged document. He is accused of writing checks on the account of Brenda and Richard Anders.
    Jackie Ray Long of Independence was indicted on five counts of grand larceny of a firearm and one count of grand larceny. He allegedly took the guns from Brandon McClure.
