  • Nofsinger to serve 60 years

    ABINGDON – Three mothers and a grandmother testified Feb. 28 in federal court about how Richard Denny Nofsinger Jr. had adversely affected the lives of young girls through sexual contact and making pornographic videos of them.

    All four wept, sometimes to the point of near incoherence while speaking; and all four described Nofsinger as a “monster.”

    They spoke with deep grief about the rifts visited upon their families and the ongoing, possibly permanent, inability to trust others and feel safe anymore.

  • Roark not guilty of arson in house fire

    INDEPENDENCE – A Grayson County man was found not guilty of arson during a bench trial held Feb. 2 in Grayson County Circuit Court.

    Michael Paul Roark, 45, of Rugby, was charged with arson and attempting to obtain money by false pretenses, following a fire that occurred at 1559 Shippeys Branch Road in Mouth of Wilson on Dec. 31, 2013.

    He was convicted of the felony obtaining money charge.

  • Grayson court unseals more indictments

    INDEPENDENCE – Several more sealed indictments have been opened after being handed down by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met Jan. 27 in Independence, including charges against a Galax man accused of raping a child.

    Michael Dwayne Wroten, 35, was indicted on two counts for rape of a child less than 13 years old; sodomy with a child less than 13 years old; and object sexual penetration.

  • Pot activist gets new court date in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — A Michigan man charged with marijuana possession, who staged a protest in front of the Carroll County courthouse in December, was in court again Feb. 17.

    Carroll County General District Court Judge Edward M. Turner issued a continuance for the trial of Keith Leo Olson of Davison, Mich. His trial for possession of marijuana is now set for July 28.

  • Grand jury indicts man for running driver off road

    INDEPENDENCE — A man who allegedly chased another driver off the road and caused him to crash through a house in Galax was indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met Jan. 27.

    Four sealed indictments against Travis Dale Coulson, 38, of Galax were recently opened, in connection with a chase that occurred Jan. 3 in the county and city. The charges were sealed until Coulson could be served with warrants.

  • Davis faces 8 more charges in murder case

    INDEPENDENCE – Eight more indictments have been unsealed against Greyling Dwayne “Beany” Davis, charged in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, Karen Cates, and wounding David Patton last year.

    The charges were sealed by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met Jan. 27, until Davis could be served with warrants.

  • Judge postpones Eisenhauer murder trial

    CHRISTIANSBURG — A trial for David Eisenhauer, 19, a former Virginia Tech student charged with first-degree murder, has been postponed, according to lmedia reports.

    Eisenhauer also is charged with abduction and hiding a body in the death of 13-year-old Blacksburg resident Nicole Lovell, whose body was found near Galax in January 2016.

    SMYTH COUNTY ― A Smyth County judge heard evidence in January against a Wythe County man, charged in the August 2016 hit-and-run slaying of his ex-girlfriend and the malicious wounding of her companion.

    The hit-and-run incident left 35-year-old Heather Michelle Clontz dead and 28-year-old Samuel David Lawson injured.
