  • Anders to serve 5 years for deputy assault

    INDEPENDENCE — Randy Lee Anders was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison after a two-day jury trial last week in Grayson County Circuit Court.

    Anders, 33, faced two charges of assaulting police officers during an incident in April 2013 that resulted in Grayson deputies shooting him four times. Officers said that he pulled a gun on them and resisted arrest.

    After an unsuccessful attempt a plea agreement earlier this year, a jury trial was set for July 24-25 in Independence.

  • Witness' memories questioned in murder case

    HILLSVILLE — A witness’ testimony in the murder trial against Matthew Steven Jones was heard on Monday as part of an evidence suppression hearing at Carroll County Circuit Court.

    Jones is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Desia Rae George, 33, of Fries, who was reported missing on April 16, 2013. Jones was reportedly the last person to see her before she disappeared. She was found dead beside a road in Grayson County about a month later.

  • FedEx indicted for illegal drug deliveries

    SAN FRANCISCO, Cal. — A federal grand jury in San Francisco indicted FedEx Corporation, FedEx Express Inc. and FedEx Corporate Services Inc. on July 17 with conspiracies to traffic in controlled substances and misbranded prescription drugs for its role in distributing controlled substances and prescription drugs for illegal Internet pharmacies.

    The charges allege that FedEx has known for the past decade that it was delivering illegal drugs to dealers and addicts, and had been warned in 2004 that it was violating state and federal law.

  • Murder suspect has court date this week

    INDEPENDENCE — Matthew Steven Jones appeared in Grayson County Circuit Court on June 27 for a evidence suppression hearing, but it was delayed because a witness in the case could not be located.

    Jones is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Desia Rae George, 33, of Fries, who was reported missing April 16, 2013. Jones was reportedly the last person to see her before she disappeared.

    Karen Boyer of Hillsville, Jones’ attorney, asked Judge Brett Geisler to set another date for the hearing.

  • Former airport director charged with embezzling

    HILLSVILLE — David Ritter Jr., a former manager of the Twin County Airport, has been indicted on two counts of embezzling public funds totaling more than $11,000 from the Twin County Airport Commission.

    According to Carroll County Commonwealth’s Attorney Nathan Lyons, Ritter was charged after an audit uncovered discrepancies with the commission funds.
