  • Reeves' murder trial date moved

    INDEPENDENCE — For the third time, Chad Allen Reeves of Galax has a new trial date in Grayson County Circuit Court.

    Reeves, 31, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brandon Billings 12 years ago.

    Reeves, who is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin without bond, was first scheduled for trial on June 23-27. After waiving his right to a speedy trial, a new date of Dec. 15-20 was set by Grayson County Circuit Court Judge Brett Geisler.

  • Hillsville woman charged with embezzling

    HILLSVILLE — A Hillsville woman has been indicted for multiple counts of embezzlement from a local business, according formal charges filed during the Carroll County Circuit Court grand Jury session in June.

    The charges had been sealed until recently.

    According to the indictment, Alena Surratt Spangler of Hillsville has been charged with six felony counts of embezzlement of more than $200 each from the Carroll County Farm Bureau.

  • Carroll grand jury issues direct indictments

    HILLSVILLE — A Carroll County grand jury released a total of 14 direct indictments against seven individuals in September.

    Richard Dale Guynn, 43, received four charges, which include malicious wounding, shooting into an occupied vehicle, abuse and neglect of a child, and possession of a firearm after being convicted of a felony.

    According to the indictments, the grand jury charged that Guynn “did feloniously and maliciously shoot into an occupied motor vehicle” on May 6.

  • Carroll grand jury issues 88 indictments

    HILLSVILLE — A grand jury issued a total of 88 indictments against 47 individuals in Carroll County Circuit Court on Monday.

    The indictment list included five charges against Arless Lynn Dalton Jr., for grand larceny, statutory burglary, obtaining money by false pretenses (third or subsequent offense), shoplifting (third offense) and escape from law enforcement.

  • Inmate indicted for cell block cell phone

    INDEPENDENCE — A prisoner at River North Correctional Center in Independence has been indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury for possession of a cellular telephone by a prisoner.

    Cory DeLaurencio, 38, was indicted by the grand jury on July 25. The indictment was unsealed after an arrest was made in the case.

    DeLaurencio is serving a life sentence at the state prison after being convicted of capital murder, robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in a 1996 incident in Virginia Beach.

  • McDonnell, wife found guilty of corruption charges

    RICHMOND — In a historic verdict Thursday, a federal jury convicted former Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, on felony corruption charges. It’s the first time a Virginia governor has been found guilty of crimes in office.

    Bob McDonnell was convicted on 11 of 13 counts and Maureen McDonnell on nine of 13 counts, mostly centering on their relationship with businessman Jonnie Williams, with whom they conspired to promote his diet supplement business in exchange for more than $177,000 in loans, gifts and luxury vacations.
