  • Two indicted for murder in fatal dog mauling

    INDEPENDENCE – Two Grayson County residents were indicted on second-degree murder and other charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury last Friday.

    The charges involve the death of 15-month-old Payton Lyrik Sawyers, who was killed by the couple’s dog.

    John Terry Underwood II, 51, was indicted on three charges, including failure to contain a vicious dog resulting in serious human injury; abuse or child neglect; and murder in the second-degree.

    District Court

    These sentences were recorded in December of 2015 in the Galax General District Court Office, Galax. Sentences may be appealed:
    Alan Joseph Cesnavisius of Sparta, N.C., guilty of public swearing/intoxication; pay $25 fine and $121 costs.
    Heather Lynn Hamm of Sparta, N.C., guilty of obstruction of justice without force; sentenced to 30 days in jail, suspended; unsupervised probation for 12 months; pay $216 costs.

    INDEPENDENCE – Indictments against three Independence residents have recently been unsealed.

    The Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury met July 22 and returned several sealed indictments. They were not made public until those named in the indictments were charged.

  • Factory vandalism trial delayed

    HILLSVILLE — Corey Dean Hodges’ criminal trial has been granted a continuance in the Carroll County Circuit Court; the Oct. 20 date has been changed to Dec. 12.

    Hodges was charged with destruction of property and statutory burglary after a Feb. 3 incident at Vaughan-Bassett Furniture in Galax.

    These sentences were recorded in March in the Carroll County General District Court Office, Hillsville. Sentences may be appealed:

  • Carroll grand jury issues 103 indictments

    HILLSVILLE – A Carroll County grand jury met on Sept. 19 and returned a total of 103 indictments against 64 individuals.

    Included in those indictments were five charges against Jason Andrew Broderick, 34, of Adrian, Mich. Broderick was involved in a police chase in Hillsville on April 10 that resulted in the total loss of a Hillsville police vehicle.
