  • Hearing delayed in Davis murder case

    INDEPENDENCE — A preliminary hearing has again been delayed for Greyling Dwayne “Beany” Davis of Galax, who is charged with the first-degree murder of Karen Cates at her Grayson County home.

    The hearing was continued Monday morning in Grayson County General District Court.

    An arraignment hearing was held on May 2 for Davis, where Jonathon Venzie of Independence was appointed as his defense attorney, according to the court.

  • Eisenhauer won't face capital murder charge

    CHRISTIANSBURG — A former Virginia Tech student will not face a capital murder charge in the killing of 13-year-old Nicole Lovell, whose body was found just outside Grayson County last year.

    Mary Pettitt, commonwealth’s attorney for Montgomery County, said Tuesday that investigators had not been able to prove that David Eisenhauer, 19, had sexual contact with Lovell.

  • Court unseals indictments in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE – The Carroll County Circuit Court has unsealed additional indictments from the June 20 meeting of the grand jury.

    All the indictments were for drug-related charges:

    • Danielle Lee Martin, of Hillsville, has been charged with possession of a Schedule II drug (methamphetamine)

    • Nicole Leann Alderman, of Cana, has been charged with possession of a Schedule II drug (methamphetamine)

  • Grayson grand jury indicts 11

    INDEPENDENCE – A Galax man was indicted on two counts of rape last Friday by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.

    Jovanni Martinez Garcia, 28, was indicted on the two charges that involved a female less than 13 years old. One count allegedly occurred on or about April 4, and the other on or about April 7, 2016.

    The grand jury indicted a total of 11 people on 18 charges, in addition to several sealed indictments that will be opened later after warrants are served.

  • Harper murder case won't proceed

    INDEPENDENCE ― George Albert Harper III, who was charged with first-degree murder in the 2002 shooting death of Brandon Billings, has pleaded guilty to two counts of perjury for giving conflicting testimony to Grayson County grand juries.

    As a result, the prosecution will not go forward with the murder charge against Harper and a charge for using a firearm in commission of a felony was amended to reflect one of the two perjury charges.

  • Court: N.C. man sold meth to informant

    Staff Report

    ROANOKE – A North Carolina man, who traveled from North Carolina to Carroll County to sell methamphetamine, pleaded guilty Monday to federal drug and firearms charges.

    Mack Daniel Barton, 37, of Laurel Hill, N.C., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke to one count of possession with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine and one count of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

  • Parks brings years of legal experience to assistant prosecutor job

    INDEPENDENCE ― The volume of cases handled by the Grayson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office requires a larger staff than it once did, and now features two assistant prosecutors.

    Marty Parks has served assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Grayson since late 2012.

    With an extensive history in the practice of law, Parks accepted the position with the county after turning it down once before due to bad timing. Prior to his current position, Parks had a practice in Galax, where he’d worked since 1980.
