  • Galax man indicted on arson charges

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man was indicted on five charges in connection with a fire that damaged Pine Crest Apartments in the city.

    A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury last week indicted Phillip Allen Holdaway, 34, on two counts of arson, two counts of statutory burglary and one count of felonious damage to property.

  • Shooting suspect will need new attorney

    HILLSVILLE — Christopher Duncan, who faces two attempted second-degree murder charges and multiple other charges in the 2014 shooting of Marty Lee Hiatt, will need to find a new attorney for his case.

    Duncan, who was scheduled for a plea hearing on Tuesday morning, appeared in Carroll County Circuit Court with his defense attorney, Randy Jones, who addressed Judge Brett Geisler with a motion to withdraw from the case.

  • Pharmacist pleads guilty to illegally obtaining drugs

    HILLSVILLE — James Lionel Surratt Jr. pleaded guilty to two counts of obtaining drugs by false pretenses in Carroll County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

    According to Carroll Commonwealth’s Attorney Nathan Lyons, Surratt had obtained various mixtures of hydrocodone while working with two different pharmacies — Walmart Pharmacy in Galax and Nuckolls Drug Company in Hillsville.

  • Woman pleads guilty to embezzling from law firm

    ABINGDON – Patricia Ethel Chinault, 72, of Apopka, Fla., pleaded guilty to embezzling approximately $1 million from a Carroll County law firm on March 17, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Abingdon.

    Chinault previously lived in Carroll County and worked as a bookkeeper for the law firm. After she moved to Florida in 2009, Chinault continued to provide bookkeeping services for the firm.

  • Former guard pleads guilty, avoids jail

    ROANOKE — A 39-year-old Hillsville man will spend three years on probation for a crime involving drug distribution and firearms.

    Victor Lee Billings will face three years on probation and a special assessment of $100, after being convicted of illegal possession of a firearm while illegally using a controlled substance, According to Brian P. McGinn, a public affairs specialist for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District in Roanoke.
