  • Jury trial set in attempted murder case

    HILLSVILLE — With the appointment of a new attorney, Christopher Lee Duncan now has a jury trial date to hear his case at Carroll County Circuit Court.

    Duncan, 38, was arrested Dec. 1, 2014, in the Wards Gap area of the county. He faces a total of seven charges in the shooting of Marty Lee Hiatt.

    His trial is scheduled for Oct. 21 at 9 a.m.

  • Trial to be set for Billings homicide suspect

    INDEPENDENCE — Both suspects in the 2002 shooting death of Brandon Billings are now being scheduled for hearings in Grayson County Circuit Court.

    Chad Allen Reeves, 32, and George Albert Harper III, 41, have been charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in the death of high school student Billings — a case that is almost 13 years old.

  • Plea hearing set in second-degree murder case

    HILLSVILLE — Christopher Dean Woolwine of Christiansburg is scheduled for a plea hearing in Carroll County Circuit Court on May 26.

    Woolwine was arrested last Halloween after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident on U.S. 52. According to the police report, Woolwine traveled a tenth of a mile from the scene before wrecking his vehicle a second time.

    Woolwine was traveling with his young son that evening, and both were injured as a result of the crash.

    The child later died at Wake Forest Baptist Trauma Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.

  • Galax man indicted on arson charges

    INDEPENDENCE — A Galax man was indicted on five charges in connection with a fire that damaged Pine Crest Apartments in the city.

    A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury last week indicted Phillip Allen Holdaway, 34, on two counts of arson, two counts of statutory burglary and one count of felonious damage to property.

  • Shooting suspect will need new attorney

    HILLSVILLE — Christopher Duncan, who faces two attempted second-degree murder charges and multiple other charges in the 2014 shooting of Marty Lee Hiatt, will need to find a new attorney for his case.

    Duncan, who was scheduled for a plea hearing on Tuesday morning, appeared in Carroll County Circuit Court with his defense attorney, Randy Jones, who addressed Judge Brett Geisler with a motion to withdraw from the case.
