  • Closing arguments presented in McDonnell corruption case

    RICHMOND — A federal jury was to begin deliberating Tuesday on the fate of former Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, who could face decades in prison if convicted on public corruption charges.

    For almost eight hours last Friday, the jury of seven men and five women heard passionate closing arguments from prosecutors and defense attorneys in a trial that has captivated the state capital for five weeks.

    It is a historic spectacle: Never before has a Virginia governor gone on trial for conduct in office.

  • Man pleads pleads guilty to sexual battery of teen

    HILLSVILLE — A former Carroll County emergency services worker pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery involving a child age 15 or older, according to information from Carroll County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

    Jason Lee Burnette, 31, was charged in November 2013 with one count of carnal knowledge and three counts of sexual intercourse with a minor, after the Carroll County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint from the family of a child age 13 to 15 years old.

  • Jones gets new trial date in murder case

    INDEPENDENCE — Matthew Steven Jones, who faces a first-degree murder charge, was granted a new trial date by Grayson County Circuit Court Judge Brett Geisler during an appearance last Friday.

    His jury trial was originally set for Sept. 10, 11 and 13, but it was changed to Nov. 19-21.

    He is represented by Hillsville attorney Karen Boyer.

  • Grayson grand jury indicts four

    INDEPENDENCE — Indictments against four suspects that were sealed by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury have been opened.

    The grand jury met July 25 and sealed several indictments. They were unsealed after the warrants were served.

    According to court records:

    • Colt Andrew Matthews, 29, of Galax, was indicted on two counts of aggravated sexual battery and two misdemeanor accounts of assault on a family member.

  • Stoneman indicted for wounding officer

    WYTHEVILLE — A local man who was sought earlier this year in connection with the malicious wounding of a Wythe County deputy was indicted by a grand jury on July 21 in Wythe County Circuit Court.

    Cheston Stoneman, 32, of Hillsville, was apprehended by police on May 7, at a residence off of Joy Ranch Road. He was arrested on warrants from Wythe County for the malicious wounding of Deputy Zach Puckett on April 27. He was also served with warrants from Carroll County for probation violations for six previous felony convictions.
