RICHMOND — Yielding to protests from localities, the Virginia House of Delegates on Tuesday defeated an effort to restrict local taxing power.

While Food Lion is closing more than 100 stores, the location in Hillsville is not one of them.
The local grocery is not on Food Lion’s list of underperforming stores set to close in the next 30 days.
In Virginia, Food Lion stores in Roanoke and Radford will close, according to Delhaize, the Belgian supermarket chain that operates the Food Lion brand. Though nearby Mount Airy, N.C., has four Food Lions, none are on the chopping block.
