    Clothes on racks are color-coded and sorted by type in one area, while books are arranged neatly on a wall of shelves in another. Electronics are stacked in one section, and an impressive selection of furniture lines the back wall.

  • Wildwood prospect still pending

    Twin County economic developers may know definitive answers by May or June about whether a major business prospect will locate at Wildwood Commerce Park.
    The Blue Ridge Crossroads Economic Development Authority (BRCEDA) last year asked the Virginia Tobacco Commission for financial assistance in getting the park off Interstate 77 in Carroll County ready for a business potentially interested in the site.

  • Natural gas service closer to completion

    HILLSVILLE — A motion relating to the natural gas service line approved Feb. 4 by the Carroll Industrial Authority gives a hint to the new utility’s future.
    The IDA took action in 2012 to provide natural gas service to the Mohawk plant after years of inaction by private companies, and now the effort only lacks about 3,000 linear feet from making that connection.

  • Med-Fit adds laser, more jobs

    INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County leaders have approved a $225,000 loan to a local business that will help facilitate the costs of additional capital improvements and continue to add jobs to the company.
    County Administrator Jonathan Sweet told the Grayson Board of Supervisors last month that a $225,000 loan was approved by the Industrial Development Authority to Med-Fit Systems Inc. (formerly Nautilus) to complement other investments the company is making in purchasing additional equipment.

  • Galax getting new Dollar General store

    Galax is set to get a second Dollar General Store, and grading work for the site has already begun on South Main Street.
    Recently, a former restaurant building and a car wash were torn down on South Main, making way for the new store.
    Dollar General’s public relations manager, Crystal Ghassemi, says that the new store will open in the spring.
    Galax City Manager Keith Barker confirmed the plans for Dollar General, but noted that construction is still in its early stages.

  • Grant will help company rebuild after fire

    INDEPENDENCE – Grayson supervisors have approved a performance grant agreement between the county and Independence Lumber that is designed to help the company rebuild and maintain its employment following a fire last month at the facility.

  • Carroll IDA approves new owner for Market Village

    HILLSVILLE — Instead of foreclosing on the Market Village shops, the Carroll Industrial Development Authority has accepted a deal to let another company assume the outstanding debt on it.
    Weststar Investments, the company that developed the retail spaces that also house the Blue Ridge Plateau Visitors Center, is out — a business named HATCO is now included in the arrangements with the IDA, according to information from County Attorney Jim Cornwell and County Administrator Gary Larrowe.

  • Carroll chamber presents awards

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Chamber of Commerce capped off a busy year with its annual meeting at Cabo’s on Dec. 6.
    Executive Director Sherry Shaffner handed out awards and members elected a slate of officers.
    Shaffner revealed to the 26 dinner attendees gathered in the banquet room on the second floor of Cabo’s that Hillcrest Florist is the member of the year.

  • Hotel owners would welcome development

    HILLSVILLE — Businessmen with hotels at Interstate 77’s Exit 14 want to see more nationally known restaurants as their neighbors, and they approached Hillsville Town Council on Monday for help in making that happen.
    For their part, town officials answered that certain barriers for future development have fallen after Hillsville annexed the busy I-77/U.S. 58 interchange from Carroll County last year, and that government and businesses need to work together to ensure that the area continues to grow.
