  • Mary M. McGrady, 84

    Mary M. McGrady, 84, of Woodlawn, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Trinity Mission of Hillsville.  
    She was born in Carroll County to the late Ellis and Goldie Webb McGrady.  
    In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Wise McGrady.
    Survivors include her daughter, Joann McGrady of Woodlawn; and special friends, Karen and Larry Smith.
    A funeral was held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Lawson officiating.  Burial was in the Webb-Skyview Cemetery.  

  • Erbie Thompson, 80

    Erbie Thompson, 80, of Hillsville, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Golden Living Center.  
    He was born in Carroll County to the late  Ernie and Edith Quesinberry Thompson.  
    Survivors include his wife, Martha L. Thompson of the home; children and spouse, David Glenn Thompson and Diane and Jerry Caviness, Charlotte Bryant and Delphia  Griffin, Hillsville, all of Hillsville; sister and brother-in-law; Wanda and Mont Byrd of Mount Airy, N.C., three grandchildren; step grandchildren, Tyler and Paige; and six nephews and one niece.

  • Ella Mae Spicer, 88

    Ella Mae Spicer, 88, of Independence died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at her home.
    She was born Sept. 20, 1922, at Independence to the late Will and Dora Hayes Spicer.
    Survivors include a brother and spouse, Granville and Mae Spicer of Hillsville; sister, Reather Weatherman of Jonesville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
    A funeral was held at 11 a.m., Saturday, in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel, Independence. Interment followed in Fox Cemetery. The Rev. Terri Gregory officiated.

  • Thomas Creighton Nester, 66

    Thomas Creighton Nester, 66, of Hillsville died Sunday, Dec, 12, 2010, at his home.
    He was born in McDowell County, West Virginia to the late Henry Conduff and Cloie Dalton Nester.

  • James Walter Miller, 84

    James Walter Miller, 84, of Fries, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, in Twin County Regional Hospital.
    He was born in Carroll County June 26, 1926 to Frank and Gladys Burnett Miller.
    Survivors include his wife, Virginia Miller of the home; daughters and son-in-law, Pam and Jessie Shumate and Carolyn martin, both of Galax; brother, Dice Miller of Austinville; sister, Ruth Ann Light of Bassett; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; special caregivers at Grayson Nursing Home; special friend and neighbor.

  • Dorothy Hash Cox, 82

    Dorothy Jenelle Hash Cox, 82, of Galax, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at her home.
    She was born June 20, 1928, to Robert L. and Beulah Clyde Phipps Hash in Grayson County.
    Survivors include her husband, T.O. Cox Jr., of Galax; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Terry Jemison of Alexandria; Sarah and Ricky Gallimore of Galax; son and daughter-in-law, Talmage and Dane Cox of Centreville; grandchildren, Talmage O. Cox IV, Kelly M. Jemison, Robert D. Cox, Douglas J. Jemison; sisters, Ruth Hampton of Galax and Henrietta Cox of Bridle Creek; and many nieces and nephews.

  • June Worrell Coe, 91

    June Worrell Coe, 91, of Hillsville, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehabilitation.
    She was born in Carroll County to the late Norman Joshua Worrell and Susan Ann Elizabeth Blackard Worrell.  
    In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Coe.

  • Alma Melton, 83

    Alma Melton, 83, of Galax, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, in the Twin County Regional Hospital.
    She was born May 2, 1927, in Carroll County to Everett and Lavada Hanks Melton.
    Survivors include a brother, Harold Melton of Galax; a nephew; three nieces; and several great-nieces and nephews.
    A funeral was held Friday in the Oakland United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Sharon Wright and the Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

  • Ruby Edwards Lawson, 88

    Ruby Edwards Lawson, 88, joined the Church Triumphant on Dec. 8, 2010.
    She was born on May 9, 1922, in Carroll County, Va., to the late Roby and Lillian Howard Edwards.
    In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Leamon B. Lawson; daughter, Louise Barbara Lawson; sister, Lucille Hicks; and brother, Roby Edwards Jr.

  • Robert (Bobby) Gene Lane, 66

    Robert (Bobby) Gene Lane, 66, of Fries, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.
    He was born Feb. 10, 1944, in Martinsville to Roscoe Edward and Ruby Lucille Wilson Lane.
    Survivors include his wife, Vonda Lane of Fries; step daughter, Etta Fine of Lexington, N.C.; brothers, Manuel Lane of Fries and Freddie Lane of Salisbury, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
    A graveside service was held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Mount Olivet Cemetery at Fries with the Rev. Tim Bond officiating.
